I also go to the trouble of doing my alignment with the string method, and have never been able to get the right cap very tight (without losing alignment). And just discovered my cap fell off sometime last week! When the new one gets here, I'll try the rag in the chain/sprocket method, but...
I bought my '05 a couple years ago with similar problems, mostly scratches to the bar ends and the stator cover. I think it's a good way to get a nice machine at a very discounted price. If you're patient, you'll find the plastics for sale as people part out bikes.
If you're mechanically...
That sounds like a very reasonable price for California, IMO the Bay Area & Sacto have the best prices up & down the state. Take a look at what the optimists are asking in my neighborhood 2004 FZ6 Must Sell-Moving to CT in 2 weeks
As someone else said, wait for winter rains, prices will drop...
Above is the Nacimiento-Ferguson Rd which cuts through Fort Hunter Ligget Army Base. I haven't personally been on it for almost 20yrs, but I do know that people from my local group ride it every so often. It can be really tough spotting the turn for this off Hwy 1. Be prepared to show...
Extending the deadline may be a good idea. There's probably quite a few people, like myself, that only go to the site on occasion. So I almost missed the shirt sale altogether.
I couldn't see it either. When I took my hands off the bars going down the road, the bike wouldn't go straight. There can be other causes of this, but this is an easy check.
Here's a good thread...
Be sure to check that the forks are straight in the triple clamps first. I bought my bike used and assumed for the longest time that the bars weren't straight. After not too much wrenching, it's really straight now.
I use Moto Solutions Fogtech on the inside of the visor, Really good stuff.
Still looking for a good RainX type of product for the outside of the visor - Moto Solutions reports they're coming out with an improved outside visor product soon.
I've lived in the southern San Joaquin Valley...
My kill switch failed a few months ago. You can test it out in a quiet garage with the key on and the engine off. Try to slowly flip the kill switch from on to off so as to make/break the circuit and listen for a 'click' noise under the seat. Now, with the switch in the run position, jiggle...
If I finally stop making excuses, I might be up for it. More interested in Tues 9/8/09 to save money and maybe have a less crowded track. This would be my first trackday.
All of the previous responses are probably the most applicable advice to your situation. But I'll also add that my throttle control really improved after tightening the throttle cable free play. There used to be quite a bit of twisting before the gas came back on, which really compounded the...
Another good reason to park pointing uphill is that when you're ready to leave you can use the engine to pull you forward or gravity to roll you backward. Definitely a pain to push a bike backwards up a hill.
Torqueing your axle to 80+lbs will be fine. The main idea is that it's on nice & tight. So you've got that covered.
Yeah, those index marks for the rear axle alignment are pretty poor. There's a method for aligning your rear wheel with string. Put bike on centerstand, keep front wheel...
