This sample of blood came from a twenty one year-old smoker.
They are slightly overweight and have a family history of high Cholesterol.

If you have a similar history get your Cholesterol checked and change your lifestyle.

1ml sample of which .5ml is fat and .5ml is blood.

sounds like a bit dodgy to me, do you have a report to back it up?
(not that i advocate smoking or being fat!)

I promise you that this came from a sample I took from a patient this morning.
The lipid levels were so high that the lab was unable to analyse it.
I have seen fatty deposits in blood samples before but nothing like this.
The sample was rested in order for the lipids to separate from the red blood cells.

ah ok, i thought the fats would have been disolved in the blood

i keep meaning to get my bloods checked out just to see what effect my diet has; i eat high protein, high fat, and little in the way of grains and carbs. plus i crossfit :D

Normally the fat is undetectable by visual inspection. As blood is made up of about 90% water the fat will float on it once left standing.
Usually all you see is a straw coloured plasma like separation. Believe me we were all gob smacked when we saw this.
Sounds like you are fairly healthy, but still worth getting checked.

i think it's a little counter-intuitive that eating fat can be good for you, especially when all the marketing stuff advertises itself as being "low fat", but makes no mention of how much sugar it contains instead :spank:

This is really extreme. Thanks for posting.

I dont smoke but I feel like not moving is just as bad. When you add every weeks sitting for 40+ hours on a chair at work, 50+ hours of sleeping and then further sitting to eat, to play xbox360, to read, to watch my favorite show, to take a break. Its a lot of sitting. :spank:

I travel some and it is quite a shock to see how much better the "eating lifestyles" for people are in other countries. In the area I am from the norm is to be morbidly obeese. It is quite common in this area for people to be 100lbs or more overweight, smoke and zero exercise. I am 6' and 160lbs and I crack up when someone waddles up to me out of breath and sweating and tells me I am too skinny lol. Fast food and poor eating habits is so embedded in our lifestyle in this country I am not sure if most people will ever "wake up and smell the coffee".

You don't necessarily have to be obese to have raised lipid levels. Lifestyle is a big factor. Two months ago I looked after a football referee who had suffered a Myocardial infarction (heart attack) during a game. He was pretty fit but smoked 20 a day.

Obesity and poor nutrition are a modern disease. Type II diabetes is on the increase and are real threat.

I recently checked my Cholesterol levels and it scared the crap out of me.
I am 41 and in the last year put on 14lbs and stopped exercising and neglected my diet.
So I started exercising again, modded my diet and have now lost the 14lb.
Cholesterol to be checked again in 3 weeks.
It's important to added that heart disease and high cholesterol is a bit of a family trait.
"Dam those genetics".

Wow, that is really... REALLY scary. I'm going to have to show my daughter that pic, trying to get her to exercise is like trying to push a square peg into a round hole. She is seeing a doctor and doing something about her weight now, but this pic might help a bit.

I'm about 6'2" - 91 Kgs, don't really eat the best and yes, I smoke (12-15 rollies a day).
I'm not the most active person in the world either..lol, although I do walk about 10 Kms every day during work.
I'm pretty sure they check my Cholesterol each time I get my blood tested for my medical condition (hypokalaemia), he takes heaps of blood each time and says he "does the lot", and he's never mentioned anything wrong.

Thanks for posting Neil, might be a real eye-opener for people and kick-start a healthy change of life-style.
