Latest from New Yamaha FZ8 revealed in leaked pictures - | Motorbike reviews | Latest Bike Videos | MCN

MCN said:
Yamaha’s new FZ8 Fazer has been fully revealed in this set of leaked pictures.

The new bike, due to be officially unveiled in the summer as a replacement for the FZ6 Fazer, had until now only been partially revealed with two teaser shots released by Yamaha of just the nose.

But these new pictures, believed to have been leaked to the media from the Yamaha factory in Japan, now show the full bike in all its glory.

It’s immediately clear the new FZ8 is based very closely on the FZ1, its 1000cc big brother.

Like that bike both half-faired (Fazer) and naked (FZ8) versions will be available. The motor is believed to be a sleeved-down version of the FZ1 engine and to produce around 120bhp compared to the FZ1’s 150.

We’ll bring you more details (and pictures) as soon as possible.

The faired version looks like a great bike to ride. I hope they kept the 180 out back (as opposed to a 190).

It looks like what half of this forum has been trying to build for 5 years now...lol

they're not bad.
In color I think they actually look killer.
but I'll still wait for the FZ12R or something like that :)

Comparison shot...

I resized a pic of my FZ1 and made it almost to scale of the MCN photo to compare the similarities. Very close!

It looks like a crossbreed between the FZ6 and FZ1, I don't really like it, especially that ugly exhaust. I would rather get the FZ1, I don't understand Yamaha's reason for building a bike with only 200cc's less than their best selling naked.

I like it! I can see one of these in my future! I'd like a mid-size sport/tourer and this looks PERFECT to me.

When I look at all the mods I did to the FZ6 this bike addresses almost all of them.

All it needs is an Akrapovic slip-on, a Power Commander V, and a nice AF1 Racing dyno tune! Soft bags, Cramp-Buster, and I'm good to go!

Any ideas what the price might be? $8,499ish?

Thanks for the post Eric. I saw it over on the FZ1 side this morning and I was going to post photos over here.

Insurance maybe? Besides, the FZ1 exhaust isn't what I'd call pretty, and this is from one of two people on the board with the ugliest exhaust every to grace any motorcycle.

Now all we need is a price, some specs and somebody to review it.

I certainly don't feel the need to rush and buy it based on the looks. Actually I think the Naked FZ1 looks better.

Pete, don't forget the freebees... airbox mod, descreen the air filter, mod the sub-throttle plates, AIS blockoff, and gut the cat. If this really is a sleeved FZ1, these will all apply and increase throttle response and performance. :D

And, you're welcome!

If it is a sleeved FZ1, why not buy it and change it to an FZ1 motor?

My question is what is the point? The FZ6 was clearly targeted at a different segment (price and size) than the FZ1. I would imagine this one closes the gap in both areas. Are they somehow hoping a buyer will make the progression from FZ6R to FZ8 to FZ1?? I can see a jump from FZ6R since they neutered it in the power department. But I suspect most people will do what they have always done, get the 600cc to learn on then jump to the liter class.

Had the FZ6 and the FZ8 been sitting next to one another at the dealership, I would have probably gone with the FZ8. Not knowing what I know now, I would have been intimdated by the FZ1, but feeling that the FZ6 might be underpowered (I know now that it certainly isn't). If the FZ6R is their "beginner's bike" now, I can see the point of the FZ8. +1 on preferring the undertail exhaust though.

If nothing else, I now have something to purchase if I wreck the Fizzy. Knock, knock, knock on wood.

I'm still scratching my head. It looks all yamaha, but i expected a lot more design wise for all the hype surrounding this bike, especially now that there's a half faired version. So similar in lines to an fz1. I like the seat, tank, and frame. The fairing looks more racy than the fz1. The down pipes look absolutely awful the way they buck away from the motor. Oooof. Exhaust, well its not an undertail. Think i'll go give my fz6 a pat. She wont be jealous of the new gal. Oh well, let the battle begin.

If it is a sleeved FZ1, why not buy it and change it to an FZ1 motor?

This bike was built to compete with the Speed Triple, the Aprilia Shiver, etc... all the 700 - 800 cc bikes. Yamaha needed a middle-man to fill a gap where sales are increasing for other manufacturers.

It's really a difference of how much HP you want to use on the road. If you want the FZ1 motor, you'd just buy the FZ1. ;)

Looking at the comparo shot? Looks like smaller brakes than the 1 as well, something I don't think any bike should skimp on.

I think it fills a void where they couldn't sell before. The 6 was just right but some are left wanting more (not just HP, but suspension, braking, etc...) so the FZ1 was there, but that scares a lot of people (and rightfully so!) so the 800cc bike will fill in nicely. Think of it as a new 6 on steroids.

The FZ6R is detuned quite a bit but still a very fun bike to carve with. When I say carve, I mean touring carve, not supersport carve. The R needs a lot of suspension work and you really need to replace the 160 with the 170 on the rear for some added bite. For my little wife though? Can't get much better for 1st-timer sport bike. :D

That may be so, but truth of the matter is, most will skip it over for the allure of owning a liter class bike.

You have to remember, there are more would be bikers who think that bigger is always better than those that buy a bike based on what they will really be doing.

If such was the case, why the big sales in the class that Yamaha is shooting for? Why are so many of the 700 - 800cc bikes being sold when they all also have a liter bike option to choose from? My opinion is in disagreement with this view. ;)

The bigger reason why it might enjoy sales is the insurance cost. The cost increase in insurance alone means that making the leap to a liter bike for many is unaffordable. This class of bike allows for a more attainable monthly outlay of cash, does it not? :D

I guess I'm looking at this from an old geezer point of view in that there used to be 550s, 750s and 1100s. Pretty distinct classes. I see the FZ8, as Eric mentioned, Yamaha and other MFGs re-establishing the 750 class. The only 750 bike is the GSXR 750, and in the US it is left over '09s for '10.

Way back years ago a 750 was considered a very fast bike, not beginners bike. They were almost as powerful as an 1100, lighter than an 1100 but much more powerful than a 550 and only a few pounds more in weight than a 550. Plenty of bike.

So will people move from a 600 to an 800 to a 1000? I don't think so. I think that the 750/800 is a terminal displacement, not a transition bike. Perhaps the MFGs are doing this to offer near 1000 performance at a lower price? The 1000cc market is all but dead right now. CBR1000RRs are going for $6,900 OTD. 600's are still pretty popular. Maybe this is the motorcycle industry's way of adjusting to market conditions?

The point of these ramblings?...I'm not exactly sure but I do think the 750 class has a place in the market and I think the FZ8 will sell well.
