K&N-204 is black and has a 17mm nut bonded to the top for easy off. I put them on hand tight as you should. Most cycle shops will have one. If the Purolator came in black I'd buy those but that color blue doesn't suit me.

its not about being cheap...its about it being unnecessary. even the manual says to change the oil filter every other oil change. do you really think leaves and gravel make their way inside the engine? it filters air impurities that make it passed the air filter and caught in the oil, not bubble gum and squirrels.

Heat is the enemy to new engines... that's why the manual says no prolonged operation above 7000pm to start. Rev the engine freely but avoid anything that will cause excessive heat... i.e. lugging the engine truck part with low rpms, traffic jams, constant high speed riding and long highway droning. Excessive heat on a new engine causes parts to glaze instead of mate.... Revving the engine to redline here and there while breaking in the engine will actually speed up the break in and help mate parts quickly. Babying the engine too much during break-in is just as bad as excessive heat.... parts will glaze, not mate.

Why would that happen?? No coolants??

Who care's what the manual says, as stated, it's cheap insurance, and you're sure as hell not going to hurt anything by doing it more often. A filter costs about $5, theres no reason not to change it every time.

Now that's funny sh*t right there!

To each his own... I'm changing both oil and filter at 75 miles (done), 600 miles (this weekend) and again at 1500 miles when I switch to synthetic. At that point, I'll change the filter every other oil change as always.

My opinion and I'm sticking to it!

Just remember that dino oil ages withouth miles once the bike has been run. 6 months of sitting or so then you have to change it. Syn holds up so you only worry about miles.

Anyway now its fixed. Everybody gets to do what they like. 99 times out of a hundred you are probley ok just changing the filter every other change. I believe it is a good idea to change it every time. If you motor is new and his is. Wear metals are being deposited in the filter along with the carbon and dirt that makes it into every engine. Something designed to clean 600cc worth of air compressed to 13.? whatever 14,000 times a minute can not catch all the dirt. I also use a very high one pass efficiency filter. I believe the down side to that type of filter is it is more likely to clog up over time. Say it clogs 500 miles before the second oil change and at that point is running unfiltered oil thru your engine. In my mind 5$ is cheaper. To others maybe not.

The owners manual reccomends every 12000 miles to change the filter. So under warrenty if you do just that you are golden, untill its out of warrenty. LOL



What About The Oil Filter?

To reduce the costs of vehicle ownership and maintenance, many car makers say the oil filter only needs to be replaced at every other oil change. Most mechanics will tell you this is false economy.
The oil filters on most engines today have been downsized to save weight, cost and space. The "standard" quart-sized filter that was once common on most engines has been replaced by a pint-sized (or smaller) filter. You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to figure out that a smaller filter has less total filtering capacity. Even so, the little filters should be adequate for a 3,000 mile oil change intervals -- but may run out of capacity long before a second oil change at 6,000 or 15,000 miles.
Replacing the oil filter every time the oil is changed, therefore, is highly recommended.
An engine’s main line of defense against abrasion and the premature wear it causes is the oil filter. The filter’s job is to remove solid contaminants such as dirt, carbon and metal particles from the oil before they can damage bearing, journal and cylinder wall surfaces in the engine. The more dirt and other contaminants the filter can trap and hold, the better.
In today’s engines, all the oil that’s picked up by the oil pump is routed through the filter before it goes to the crankshaft bearings, cam bearings and valvetrain. This is called "full-flow" filtration. It’s an efficient way of removing contaminants, and it assures only filtered oil is supplied to the engine. In time, though, accumulated dirt and debris trapped by the filter begin to obstruct the flow of oil. The filter should be changed before it reaches this point, which is why the filter needs to be replaced when the oil is changed.
If you wait too long to change the filter, there’s a danger that it might become plugged. To prevent this from causing a catastrophic engine failure due to loss of lubrication, oil filters have a built-in safety device called a "bypass valve." When the pressure drop across the filter exceeds a predetermined value (which varies depending on the engine application), the bypass valve opens so oil can continue to flow to the engine. But this allows unfiltered oil to enter the engine. Any contaminants that find their way into the crankcase will be pumped through the engine and accelerate wear.

What would be neat is to dissect [cut open] a used filter on a single oil change and then a filter on a multiple oil change. Inspection probably would surprise all of us - good or bad.

Anyway, I'll bet painting after-market filters is cheaper with the cost of paint than Yamaha's overpriced filter.

Dude,
You are not taking the cheap way out. I just did my own 600 mile inspection using my owners manual as a reference. The only problem I had was getting the oil filter off, but with alittle elbow grease and a screw driver it came off. The stealership wanted to charge me $260. That's crazy. I'll do it myself.
