Moving to Reno Nevada!

God laid off up here in Idaho so I accepted a job offer in Reno working for Dassault Aircraft Services. I start on the 7th of July. One problem and I am asking the forum for some advice. It starts off as a 90 day contract, and after that, the job would turn into a full time hire with benefits OR they can terminate my employment if my performance was not up to par, which I know it won't be but I have to keep that thought.

Fortunately I'm not tied into a lease here in Boise, so I'm paying my apartment month to month. I just need to give them 30 days notice.

1. Definitely moving out. Do I put my stuff in storage and just ship some clothes down to Reno? Remember, I just have the Fizzer so I will be riding, not even sure how many miles it is. Rent a room for 3 months or stay at an extended stay hotel? This would allow me to check out the city and visit places to live at a leisurely pace.

2. Or just move everything and go, so I don't have to move twice if it's permanent. The 4th of July Weekend is a bad day to move, most of the rental trucks will be reserved, and if it isn't, it's going to cost a lot more versus other months or weekend being it will be a holiday weekend. And where do I move into to? Searching for a place to live online, I've done it before and definitely has it's drawbacks.

I work for a moving company here and its expensive. If i were you I would go basic for the 3 months less stress then trying to move all your things. Once your 3 months are up and they want you to stay permanently you will have a better idea of the city and where you want to actually live instead of kinda guessing for a good area.

First, Congratulations on your new job.
I heard Reno, NV is a great place. My friend studies in Reno Univ.
Anyway, based on what you said, you sound like a bachelor. I know the problem of moving because of a job, as I'm a contractor developer.

It's around 7-8 hrs (approximately <500 miles) from your place to Reno.How much stuff do you have? Try renting a Penske or a U-Haul, 14 footer, one way and take all your stuff. I'm not sure why these trucks will be expensive for a long weekend.

Craigslist/Zillow has some good listings, with no lease options.
Compare that with a hotel room. Hotels should be cheaper too, since it is a small tourist place; Reno is famous for its Casinos.

Kenny, Reno eh? Wow. Until recently, I used to go up there 3-4 times a year as casinos are always offering me great promos, especially the Sands.

As you probably well know, there are a lot of extended stay motels in area. I'll be staying in nearby Tahoe week of Aug 4-8 (intensive Spanish course) so maybe I'll ride up to Reno one evening and we can sink a few somewhere.

+1 ship enough to get by for a bit. You can always fly up to Boise, rent a truck and bring your stuff down to Reno once you are settled in.

I think waiting the 3 months to bring all your stuff would be more advantageous than rushing to find a place to live, and possibly needing to move again if you don't like it.

LOL Brenda, actually took about a year. But I wan't too aggressive looking for a new gig since I was looking after my Mom (a full-time job) since she was having a hard time adjusting to the retirement home here in Boise, plus 3 trips to Japan the past year.

Love to or I can ride up to Tahoe. I know it's a horrible ride with zero scenery either direction, but we will just have to deal with it.

I'm leaning toward just putting my stuff in storage and come back in the fall to retrieve my belongings. The preliminary scouting online doesn't look very good. Definitely better to view things first hand, rather than relying on someone else's opinion.

A small commercial "storage " closet would be cheap enough. Get what you need to Reno...

I'd look for a month to month place while at Reno... My Dad and stepmother in Las Vegas, live in a condo. More than half are vacant...

I suspect with Reno NOT as popular as LV, they'd be even more small condo's available for rent..

You could also put your stuff in a pod and have them store it at their facility, then have them transport it to Reno if it pans out.

Interesting option. I don't know too much about POD except that it is a container type storage. I will have to look into it.

Hey!! You're moving to my neck of the woods (desert). We are looking forward to meeting you. We have a good group of guys (mostly) that we ride with. You are welcome to join us. We know all the good riding around these parts. Let me know when you get into town. If you want to check out their forum it is SSA.com (Sierra Sportbike Assoc). RichVee4 is my hubby. I'm not on that forum exactly. I chime in through the hubby. Lots of video and pictures of me riding though. lol I prefer this site for info, discussion, etc. He isn't on this one. lol

As far as moving advice....Reno has a variety of temporary places to stay. There are cheaper storage places here because of it. (look at storage places in North Valleys area (Stead)). I actually had a room to rent earlier this month (we have a rental house near UNR). I wish I knew you were moving here. I would have given you first shot. We already had someone sign a lease. bummer.

PM me when you get into town. Hubby and I are taking a four day riding trip into Oregon (Crater Lake area) July 16-19, but other than that we will be around. Looking forward to meeting you. We can meet up for Bike Night at PJs on Wells Ave too sometime (Wednesday evenings).

You can store the pod up to 30 days with no charge, but then it becomes a monthly rent which is about $250 a month. So essentially almost $3k for two months, including delivery door to door between two cities separated by 400 miles.

I hope I can secure something on Monday or Tue, all the leasing offices are closed on Sunday. I also just signed up to the local forum and have already posted an intro. Really sorry to hear about your lay off Kenny, but these things can often work out for the better. I totally understand your reluctance to up and move everything until you get a permanent contract.
