Need Help Speedometer problem

Hi!

I have FZ6 s2 and a exact same problem that someone had about ten years ago (https://www.600riders.com/threads/lcd-screen-intermittent-problem.55882/) but there was no solution.

The problem is that yesterday almost everything on the speedometer stopped working. The only things that worked were the neutral light, the turn signal indicators and the high beam indicator. There was nothing on the display, not even a backlight. The tachometer needle also dropped to zero.

I started moving around all the cables (as much as you can do during red lights) to see if there was any loose connection, but nothing happened. After a few minutes, everything started working again. Then again, after 15 minutes of riding, everything went off again for about 10 minutes. I had the same problem a year ago for a day, but not since. That time I didn't do anything to fix it, it just didn't do that anymore after that day.

I also noticed that when it happens, time stops, so now my watch is 30 minutes late and the kilometers I've driven during speedo off aren't showing up in the trip or total kms.

Any ideas?
 
Look at the front left side of the fuel tank and you should see a bunch of wires going up to the instrument cluster.

If your bike is faired, you'll need to take out the fairing inners (personally, I got rid of mine because they are entirely cosmetic and just get in the way when you want to do any work!)

Look at the connectors and check for loose wires, if they seem OK, separate them and look for corrosion on the pins. If so, get some WD40 Contact Cleaner spray (not WD40 itself, but it's another product they sell) and try cleaning them up, you may need to use some sandpaper if it's really manky.

If that doesn't work, you'll have to look further.
 
If it's a faired bike there is also an earth connection behind the clocks. It's a 6mm bolt with an eyelet holding the earth wire. Worth checking. The connector block on the right side is the usual culprit though.

This might be a loss of the ground path through a connection on the printed circuit board inside the instrument cluster, the connector plug, a ground lug to the engine/frame or an open wire.
There is a white with red tracer wire that provides the ground path for instrument cluster CPU. The other indicator lights are on separate circuits.
The fact that your clock looses time is also and indicator of the lost ground path because the clock is on a separate feed that is constant from the battery and is independent.
You test this by making a jumper from the white with red tracer wire to engine, chassis or negative battery terminal.
There are 2 plug assemblies that are attached to the instrument cluster and the pin that carries the white with red tracer may be corroded.

Also if you do do the ground jumper, don't ground any other wires in the plugs.

I don't know if I remember correctly but I think the clock displays even when the key is in the off position so if this is true you should see the clock come up as soon as you do the jumper to ground. In fact if this is in fact the ground path loss you should be able to bring up the clock using a test light probe with the alligator clip tied to a ground or negative.
