Hey wrightme43,I'm curious about your pre-600 oil change idea.20 years ago,I would have thought,like you,the sooner,the better with new motors. Please correct me if I'm mis-informed,but I thought new engine oil has properties that accentuate break-in & should be used to the extent through the initial period until the 1st oil change.I was told this in referance to my last new aout [ a bottom line,stripped Chevy work truck ].Does Yamaha not use special break-in oil from the factory ?If they don't,then heck ya,get it out early & often.Just tryin to learn this "new age" of engine technology. Ive worked with brand new cars/bikes for 12 years, and I aint never heard of "break-in oil" sometimes they use a thicker heavier oil because the engine doesnt turn when its in transit on the sea etc, so the heavier oil sticks to components better for the first start up once it reaches the port.

All new engines ive worked on, i change the oil before the reccomended first service, and I also reccomend going to fully synthetic, especially for newer engines.

can someone advise me as to what to check as my fz6n 2005 starts and revs fine but engage gear and it stops, neutral light fine, and side stand switch rule that out. just went when ridin now bike is 25 miles away in a strangers backyard. was dropped gently few days ago and has has tps recall in last 4 weeks.

I can see doing an oil change early, but I'm not sure I'd change to synthetic until the engine had hit its 600 mile break in as it's expecting certain oil properties in order to seat the rings properly. I may be wrong and may have drunk the Cool-Aid as they say, but I've always tried to break in engines the way the manufacturer suggests. That said I'm about to do my 600 mile "maintenance" and will give the bike it's first oil change then and go to synthetic as I think the engine has had the variable speeds and loads and miles that it asked for.

To maverick1970 - I had to chuckle at your post as I read it too quickly and thought it said you were "6' 8" and 160lbs..."

That said, I'm 6' 160# and would be curious to see the "right" way to dial in my rear shock. I've set sag, compression and rebound on mountain bike shocks, but I don't know if it's the exact same process on a motorcycle.

Shiny, what Oil Filter do you use & where do you buy it? I believe I will use 10-40W oil, is this correct? 2009 FZ6, it's a new bike as of 2/22/2011...

I just read all 3 pages looking for "How to guides" and only found 1 semi-useful guide. This thread shouldn't be stickyed, content needs to be added, or it should be retitled to "How to adjust your suspension/read stuff from people yammering about when they should first change their oil"

... I have just rececked the link, sadly they have removed the how to guides. There is still some great bike content though. Nelly
