Had my 1st service today..got a roasting

Well ive finally hit the 600 mile mark..woohoo..so the bike went in friday and i picked it up today..the service manager tore strips off me for not having it serviced earlier...i thought he was being sarcastic as the mileage was on 607m..at this point he starts huffing and puffing ,opens my service book and points at the top heading of the first service.."600 miles or 6 weeks (which ever comes first)"..whoops was all i could say. (i bought the bike in Aug 08)
Ive known most of the guys there for years and he wasnt being an arse ..it was more like a father giving his son a telling off .luckilly they still honoured their 1st free service

I really need to start paying more attention to my manual

He also took a little swipe at my exhausts..he didnt recommend putting high flowing cans on an engine which was not broken in as it can strees the valves (anyone know if this is true)..my only reply was to ask why suzuki offer subsidised price on yoshi's on their GSX range when purchased new

Got the bike on a Friday, went in for service on Monday

Same here! I got 1000 km on the bike over a single weekend so that I could get it serviced and out on the road for a bit of fun!!

i cant remember the reason for not clocking up many miles last year (or even if their was one)..i did have a riding buddy who was a member here ,but he's moved to Brisbane for 3 years and his bro (my best mate) has just sold his ER6n.

This year will be different im gonna be out on it every weekend possible,even if i am on my own.

So, ahh what exactly happens to an engine, or motorcycle in the first six weeks after it goes out the door if it's sitting still parked?

Using that logic should we be doing the first service on bikes sitting on the showroom floor that we charged the battery and put a splash of fuel in after building the unit?

as far as your service, I wouldn't have waited that long regardless of miles... And exhaust or other things such as that I wouldn't do until the warranty is up... Just me i guess. If something were to go wrong engine wise Yamaha could choose not to cover it because of exhaust, air filter, oil filter, oil etc. If they really wanted to. not saying they would but very possible!

whats the warranty on these bikes? im sure mine is 5 years..if anything major went wrong the stock exhaust would go straight back on before any inspection.

Blimey. That was a bit harsh. I don't see what's with the time thing. Although having said that - what a waste! 600 miles in 7 months!!!:spank: Took me a week, even though the dealer is 50 miles from home and therefore a complete arse to get to

Thats a good idea to put it back stock before bringing it in for warranty repairs.and as far as the pipes will stress the valves that's a load of bullcrap!!!I worked with one of the smartest M/C tech's ive ever known ,and we put high performance exhaust on bikes right out of the crate never been started!!!,and he never said a word about it causing any kind of engine damage nor have I ever seen it myself.

Don't worry. Nothing you've done will have any significant consequences. They just wanted to make more $ off you. Other than having to endure our comments about you needing to ride more often you're fine.

Don't worry about the exhaust either. Even if something happened to your engine (and it would be a first as far as I know), they would have to demonstrate that something you did had a direct effect on it (that's how warranty laws work here anyway).

At the pace you're putting on mileage your bike will die from corrison or the sun will engulf the earth before you reach enough miles to be worried about the engine

well, i am not sure about the 6 weeks thing, only thing i can think of is that if you are not going at least 600 miles in 6 weeks then the metal in the oil could settle and condense on the bottom of the oil pan... but highly unlikely.

Also, i know many many people who have had high flow cans on their bikes straight off the sales floor and have never had an issue
