Hi guys...

I'm looking to do this mod and seeing BD43's  great work it looks easy enough.

I think BD43's images have an S2 though. Are the connection's the same for the 2006 FZ6 (non S2)?

Also here in the UK we have some funky laws and I was wondering if anyone has taken the mod through an MOT without any problems (failures or warnings). I was thinking of adding an in-line fuse under the seat area or behind the faring inside panel so it could be "de-activated" short term whilst being MOTed.

I did my 2006 Fazer back in November 2009 no problem. My first MOT is due in 3 weeks (first registered in April 2007) and I have already been in and asked "what if both my dipped beams were on", they did say that it's an MOT fail only because the reflector kicks the light beam up on the right side so it would "blind" on coming road users. So to save any trouble I'm just going to pull the cable out of the H4 connector before taking it in for the MOT.

Oh and as I have now done my first proper long dark ride with no street lights the dual headlights make a great improvement, but that my also be due to me spending some time with the inner fairings off and adjusting the aim so it wasn't trying the light the stars . . . . ;)

I just did the bd43 mod at the weekend and was thinking of a way around this ready for my MOT in July.

I'm also going to be upgrading the standard bulbs so thought of just snipping the spade connector off the top of the original H4 bulb. Then when it come time for the MOT, just change to the original bulb on the right side and the dip beam will not be illuminated. No need to modify the modification, just an old bulb that would have ended up in the bin anyway.

Yamaha intentionally left on one light only. It is statistically safer.

Two headlights has been shown to be a factor in accidents from oncoming traffic making a pass around a car in the same oncoming lane, assuming it's a car off in the distance instead of a motorcycle very close. I know this seems crazy to the motorcycle drivers of us but that's the scoop. I myself almost made an unsafe pass on a curvy road not realizing the oncoming "car" was a bike, and I am sensitive to it. Before that I was not a believer.

All that being said I will be doing the mod since there is another safety factor, the ability to see the road while on two wheels which affects me all of the time at night.

Great write-up.

Based on some research out there - this article would indicate to me that perhaps two lights would be beneficial. Our bikes have a reasonably aggressive human-like face, but at night with only one headlight I think it would lose that.

But to know for sure would take a whole helluvalot of research. As far as being mistaken for a car in the distance instead of a bike close by at night - unless you are on a road long enough for the car to be that far away I've never encountered this issue.

Anyway, my 2 cents. I'm going to do this mod as soon as I feel I know enough to accomplish it.

I've made the Headlight Mod myself thanks to bd43, the pin i used was from Toyota converter to ISO, the radio cables converter. (image of it is in attachment) and the bulb ending was from regular H4 connector.

.... The 45 watt headlamp filament at 12 volts would draw 3.75 amperes. ….

Here in Australia the lo-beam headlamp filaments are 55w, not 45 watt, so, by my calculation each filament would be drawing 4.6 amps, totalling 9.2, and not your calculation of 7.5 amps total - an error of 22.7%. 9.2 amps is a lot closer to the limit you state of 11 amps, leaving far less margin for error.

I'm just glad you are not working on any critical area of electronics on my bike.

Also, from the way you have described your mod, when the headlight is on bright you are running both filaments of the H4 - 55w + 60w. That's a lot more heat to dissipate

.... The bigger question is why Yamaha chose not to do this in the first place. The cost would have been minimal. Thinking like an engineer I wonder if they were concerned about the current capacity of the alternator. That would worry me. This is a “cost bike” every place to shave a dime counted in its design. I wonder if the smaller output alternator would be the issue. I would say this, if you load up with this extra 45 watt headlamp add a GPS, Radar Detector, Chatterbox Intercom, heated hand grips etc…. I would be very worried, as in no power left to charge the battery (which is already on the small side). Anyway just my thoughts….

Yep, and I'd be worried about you running 170w of lighting on high beam in place of the factory 115w Of the other things you mentioned, only the heated hand grips would draw much. Like you said: Anyway just my thoughts .....

Just want to say thanks to BD43. I performed this mod and it works great. I was able to find a premaid terminal very close to the yam terminal at the shop I work at.

I am slightly concerned with the whole night time illusion to other drivers thing but, the added light makes me feel over all safer at night so I'm leaving the wire in.:D

Again many thanks to bd43's. I've made the dual headlight mod thanks to bd43's directions without any problems. I'd like to encourage others if they plan to this mod on their own. It's not difficult with bd43's manuals.

I also got this mod done this weekend and took the opportunity to install a Battery Tender adapter cable while I had the tank up. It was my first time disassembling my baby and I'm glad bd43 did such an impressive amount of work in creating the manual. In addition, the part itself might as well have come in a Yamaha baggie. I couldn't be happier. Thanks!

Thanks BD43.

Great mod. I appreciate being able to use your info today - successfully!
I've only had my 2005 FZ6 since February, and the weather here is just now allowing me to ride, but I'm enjoying it so far.
I like it a little better now that its no longer a One-Eye.

Thank you. Dan

Performed the headlight mod today.

Thanks to bd43 for the info, never would have know the wire was already there and just had to extend it past the harness connector.

While I was at it, I went ahead and installed Sylvania Silverstar Ultra bulbs while everything was apart. :D

Thanks again bd43 for the write up. Excellent work!

Years Later . . .

A couple things to add.

When making the brass pin, use a silver Sharpie to cover the area to be cut. Take a Sharp metal scribe and scratch the lines onto the area to be cut. Mount in vice and chop away! It goes quick!

2nd:
If you can't find a proper flag terminal of 0.325", carefully flatten a 0.25" terminal. Find a nail or solid wire of 0.0650 ~ 0.0700" in diameter. With good gripping pliers, lay the wire on the outer edge of the flattened terminal and begin to roll it inwards towards the center creating the curve needed to bite into the headlight spade. The finished product can look almost as good as the bought item if done right and grip just as well.

BD - thanks for the write up that has served many!

Thanks BD43!
Fitted the harness and the motovision bulbs today. Your instructions and photos were great. The harness itself was a work of art and fitted perfect.

Another happy bd43 dual headlight mod customer! Ordered bd43's wiring harness - communication was fantastic, payment was easy, shipping was quick, product was well designed and built, and the instructions were clear! Thx bd43 - finally, no more ridicule from my single headlight friends about my headlight being "burnt" out
