Just a thought, would it be safer to bypass the kill switch alltogether if they are known to be faulty? the bike shuts of perfectly fine with the key and also with the kick stand, so why not just take it out to be sure it doesn't go bad at an inopportune time again?

They are there so if the bike tips or crashes its a quick kill.

I shut the one with the harley rider that flew thru the air with his bike behind him off with the kill switch. When I wrecked mine I shut it off with the kill switch. Its a safety feature.

I wouldnt bypass it. Just check it often. I use mine everytime I shut down.

You're not alone with the whole backorder routine...

I'm still waiting for a set of oggy knobs for my FZ6, and keep being told "they're on backorder".
Yesterday, I went in to check on them again, (after a month and a half of waiting,) and the kid said they were at the distributor's warehouse in NC, and would be there by Friday.
We'll see.
My friend who wrecked his Shadow, (after one whole hour of riding -brand new,) is still waiting on his tank and tailpipe, and they keep telling him "it's on backorder".

I would venture to guess that bike parts see a huge surge in demand from the moment warm weather hits nationwide, and then it drops in the cold times. Of course, nobody wants to sit on staionary invoice, so they all just order them as they need them and the whole system backs up with the demand.

I guess we should all just plan on it until they catch up from peak season repairs.
It gives you time to shop around and if you are patient and wise, you can plan ahead for things like tires a couple months out.

I dread having to buy tires, and hpe it will be a couple years before I need them so I can save up.

You could, but in the event of a crash, not only does it kill the bike but the fuel pump as well. This could be a life saver in the event fuel is being pumped out during or after a crash.

Yes, it is close but you'd have to release the grip with one hand where you do not with the kill switch. :thumbup:

They're Pirelli's......not sure why they're on backorder......I hear they're awesome tires..

i know just the tire...they are great.

i've ordered those same tires before...they came to my front door in a couple days and I had them mounted at a shop down the street in 30 minutes...this was for a friend (GS500). they were also around $200 for the set...I'm sure you're paying A LOT more.

I agree with Steve and Eric. It's a safety thing.....despite you or someone else may not use it all the time...it would come in handy when you're "in trouble".....but who cares....the bike is GONE!!!! No more worries.

I KNOW I can ride it, but it scares the hell out of me....it'll probably take me about a year to work up the guts to ride it (just like the FZ )

about the kill switch. all I know and can contribute is that they are always required for track days. it's a lot easier to swat at the kill switch then to grab the key if and when you're leathers are caught in the chain/sprocket about to chew you up.

Also tires are becoming very hard to come buy for every bike except for the mail order and those tires are usually factory rejects. biggest thing we have seen with mail order tires is staple holes in the side walls.....There arent a whole lot of tires available for the ninja250...... Been there many times....

mail order.... week or longer.... pay to have them mounted..... lots of your time also invested...... by the time your done mail order costs more! unless you change them yourself or have the means and thats if they are good tires and no flaws....

Why would I pay you $400+ to mount some pilot powers when I can get them from STG for $240 SHIPPED and have them mounted for $20 to $40 each (worst case cause I usually get them mounted for FREE at the track or by a friend). And don't give me a line about "time = money" because that's the most misunderstood cliche I'm aware of.

And if you think I trust someone else to wrench on all of those important parts of my bike while I'm not watching more than I trust myself you're mistaken. I care about my bike and my safety more than anyone else...you forget to factor in the time it takes to check over the bike and fix the mistakes the 20 y/o punk made when he was putting the wheels back on.

ok lets think about the personal attacks your the one doing track days on a fz not a r6! and we don't have any 20 y/o punks dip ****! our mechanic is in his late 30's and could quite possibly draw circles around you with a bike, atv, tractor, bobcat, anything else with wheels, o lets not forget tractor trailers firetrucks....etc...! people who go through alot of tires are maybe 3% of motorcyclists! ever think about that......:Flip: You have some anger issues and try to sound like a bad ass behind a keyboard... you said free at the track ding ding ding now you are like .1% of motorcyclists that have that luxury! there aren't too many people willing to spend any decent money on any decent tires around here anyway many of our suppliers have many popular tires on back order maybe if you got away from just sport tires and had a clue what you were talking about it would help! stealership... hmm i guess you need to go to a different shop! not all are like that we dont usually sell tires for retail!

Tires are one of the most important parts of a bike as far as safety and you are willing to compromise that by using take offs... hmmmmmm thats special let me guess you paid lots of money on your riding gear and then got cheap on the helmet too right.....

Hey sorry I Didn't mean to get as mean as I did however i listen to people whine about prices of things all day long and its getting old! They whine and cry that prices are high yet they will jump in their car and spend their money hours away instead of in their home towns. They buy online once again not supporting their home economy! Basically Tired of hearing the word stealership becuase we do not run our shop like that! Basically people come to us and are willing to spend the money because of our reputation! Basically I look at what we were doing 9-10 years ago and what we are doing now and it is almost 100% effected on the economy and then get to listen to people complain about things that there is no point in complaining about. Basically kinda like people complain about walmart in one sentence but then in the next that is where they are headed when they get done talking to you. Basically Internet and magazine buying has pretty much killed the motorsports market! and thats all there is to it.... Dont believe me then why are so many shops closing the door? it isnt because of unit sales a real shop makes their money from service! something we offer and very few other shops do o and if you have a problem with our work we stand behind it 100% and make it right!!! Thats why I get deffensive!

Only time i buy online is when I can't get that item in my home town or nearby!

I hear you. I have a few friends and acquaintences that work at dealerships, stealerships , performance shops, and on race teams (I do actually get out from behind this keyboard) and they are pained by the horrible reputation that dealers have in GENERAL. There are some great shops, and even some great people at horrible shops. People have a hard time understanding both sides for sure and there is A LOT of truth to the saying that if you piss a customer off they will tell everyone but if you treat them well they will only tell a few (human nature).

So, I'm not one of those poo-hooers, and I can imagine the frustratoin, but tires are a consumable, and an expensive one at that. I've had great experiences with buying tires online and so have so many other people...some of the places I buy from also have a physical store and some are simply track day / race orgs. My experience is with SS and sport touring tires, I've bought cruiser tires online but that was along time ago and I woudln't be surprised if the situation was different...but this is an FZ6 forum and the wheels come right off in no time at all.

About shops going out of business because of the internet...times change.

yeah i understand times change but i dont know bout you but i dont want someone at bass pro working on my machine or better yet someone at walmart working on it.... think pretty soon that will be the dealer you have to take it to for warranty.......Kawi and Arctic cat have already jumped on that band wagon with their ATV's and it is a horrible one!!! And yes i also live the make a customer mad and they tell everyone and the ones you do right by they tell a few. the funny thing is around us the people who are the mad customer is the dirt bag that gets a bike for free then says we are trying to rip them off because we wouldn't inspect the bike even though the muffler was broke before the baffle and the horn button was completly missing....... What do people not get about a safety inspection, its not safe thats why we wont pass it... but there are lots of back yard shops that are passing really bad stuff, have seen shops sell used bikes with bald tires, brakes metal to metal etc. and they are putting inspection stickers on these bikes when they sell them. my favorite is leaky fork seals to the point the fork oil is running down and is on the brake pads.....

Alot of us here are do it yourselfers to though. I see bad bikes all the time. I pulled up next to a dude riding on cords the other day. I wonder how many fatalites are due to bad motorcycle maintence. We are pretty tight about doing it right here.
