'08 Mods complete!

Well, my paint job on the radiator covers failed. After a flat black primer and the Cobalt overspray, they still didn't look good enough. So, I stripped them, sanded with 240 then shot them with flat black primer. I also did the pillion pegs in flat black primer while I was there. I'll post some pics once the lower cowl has arrived and is installed.

Plans for the end of the season now are to remove all four foot pegs, the radiator covers and the rearsets, disassemble all of them removing the rubber grommits, then send them all out for powder coating in Cobalt Blue. No more paint for me and the flat black primer actually looks good!

Hi I did the headlight conversion mod and did not want to take the wire to the bar so I followed it under the tank and it terminates in a block right behind the headstock

from there u can either source a terminal like the yamaha one or just snip and crimp to the green wire

10 mins and the wire just follows the existing cables throught the frame up to the light

makes a big difference at night but also looks much cooler than 1 light on

nice mods m8

A few have done it this way and it works out the same but might be a bit cleaner/easier for some. Good work!

Side note: I picked up the Yamaha Lower Cowl Friday but left for the weekend so I'll not be able to put it on until next week. :( I should have the new sliders by then and I'll also do the slight airbox mod, install a K&N air filter, put on the Battery Tender Jr leads and switch to Klotz synthetic oil with a K&N 304 (have to check part number) oil filter. After this, I'm about done for quite some time. ;)

Updated my mod thread to include the new Yamaha lower cowl I installed an hour ago. I couldn't wait and besides, it was so simple to do! Here it is but I will warn you, this is a dirty picture! :p

Man...you got that thing QUICK! That looks slick in the new blue...

I was VERY surprised to get a call on Friday saying it was in! I expected another week or more out but quite happy to pick it up so soon. Not much more to do now...

Thanx! I'm impressed with how well designed and thought out Yamaha made this and glad I didn't go with the aftermarket stuff then have to worry about matching the paint. I was litterally done with this in about 12 minutes.

Forgot to mention that his shot also shows the flat black rad covers and pillion pegs too! :D

As a person who went the non-Yamaha bellypan route first, I can say that you're completely right about the well thought out design of the mounting system for their bellypan. I think I said this before in another thread, but it took me all of 20 minutes to install, and that was with me stopping to answer my phone twice.

Oh, and those radiator covers and passenger pegs blend so well with the frame that I didn't even notice them! I saw your other post (or maybe it was this one) where you tried the blue first. Give me the details on what you used to do them (paint, primer, etc.). This is something I'm really interested in doing myself (along with the rearsets, but I want to powdercoat them and I'm not confident enough yet to remove all that). Great looking bike, FZ6inNH!

I put up a How To on the other site. Have to dupe that here! What a great mod!

For these, I took off the rad covers (two allen screws per) and sanded each lightly with 240 grit sand paper. I washed them in Dawn dish soap to clean them of dust from sanding and any oil/grease. Then, after drying with lint free cloth, I hit them with about 10 dustings of Rustoleum Gray primer (Automotive quailty, bought in a spray can at HD). I waited about 10 minutes between dustings. Then I hit them with a Rustoleum Cobalt Blue Metalic... dusted about ten times again until they were thoroughly covered, again waiting 10 minutes between coats. Mind you, I was doing a lot of other things during this process.

The rear pegs... Same process but I only used the flat black Rustoleum primer. Sanded, cleaned, dusted until coverage was complete. On the '07-'08 model, I have to warn you. When you take out the rear pegs, be CAREFUL! There's a small plate between the peg and bracket. It has two notches in it and they only really fit one way (You'll understand when you see them.) When you take the pegs out, be careful to wrap them with a small cloth BEFORE you pull them off after removing the bolt. On the side of each is a hole with a small spring covered by a ball bearing. This is what "Snaps" the peg in the up and down position by riding the ball bearing on the plate between the two notches. There is also a barrel spacer going through the peg that will fall out. The cloth around all of this is to make sure you don't drop any of these small parts or have the ball bearing roll off on you. Carefully stow all of these in a ziplock bag while you paint. If you have the PDF service manual, you can see the exploded view of how it all fits. If now, Ron Ayers has the microfiche with the exploded diagram as well.

Now, because of the mis-match in color, I stripped the rad covers (Two cans of brake cleaner took them ALL THE WAY to bare metal! w00t!), cleaned them up and did the flat black automotive Rustoleum again.

This winter, I'll remove the rad covers, four pegs, rearsets and top triple and take them all out for a perfect match metallic Cobalt Blue powder coating by a local pro. I'm going to swing over there at some point, explain what I want and get a quote from him.

Thanks FZ6inNH! I've seen tons of people paint these items themselves, but never got a real writeup on the whole process. This is really helpful!

I'd be interested to hear what the estimate is on those parts. I'm definitely thinking about getting the rad covers, passenger footpegs, and rearsets powdercoated, although I'm hesitant on the rearsets because I'm afraid I'll screw something up taking them off! LOL. Not the most mechanically-inclined person in the world, mind you.

I'd love to get the top triple done too, but that seems even more intimidating to take off than the rearsets! Maybe I could get wavex to post up a short write-up on how to do it...I know he recently had his powercoated.

Thanks!

I'll be going out next week at lunch to visit with the guys at the PC shop now that I know where they are. I'll list the parts and what they are looking to charge so you'll have an idea.

BTW, the seat (and stuff) arrived. I rode with the new seat today but it wasn't a long enough trip. Tomorrow is 200 miles north though and a good test. 200 miles back on Monday. I'll have a good idea on the comfort by then. What I have noticed already on the Yamaha comfort seat is two things. It is slightly slippery and it is slanted toward the tank a bit (with a shorter saddle horn at the tank then the stock) so I'm hoping I can break it in a bit. At least now I have the stock seat to mod and see if I can make a better saddle then either of them offer.

Have you decided yet? How's the Corbin compared to the Yammie?

why did you do an oil change at 75mls:confused:if anything happens to engine? ur warranty will NOT cover it:rockon:

Where ever did you hear that information? Changing the oil doesn't void any warranty that I'm aware of. Me thinks you've been mis-led! ;)

I changed it because of my method of breakin which is aggressive. Because of how I break in the engine, I want the original oil out as soon as possible due to the aluminum flake content coming from the rings seating. The longer those flakes remain in there, the more "aluminized" your bearings will become as the minute particilate that the filter does not catch bonds to mating surfaces. I've broken in all engines this way and never met with failure in 25 years of driving. I call this "tried and true" :D

any suggestions for good trustworthy sites that ships internatioanlly?

I wanna get a light smoke puig screen (sport) for my fz6 s2 2008.

Thanks in advance
