As a person who went the non-Yamaha bellypan route first, I can say that you're completely right about the well thought out design of the mounting system for their bellypan. I think I said this before in another thread, but it took me all of 20 minutes to install, and that was with me stopping to answer my phone twice.
I put up a How To on the other site. Have to dupe that here! What a great mod!
Oh, and those radiator covers and passenger pegs blend so well with the frame that I didn't even notice them! I saw your other post (or maybe it was this one) where you tried the blue first. Give me the details on what you used to do them (paint, primer, etc.). This is something I'm really interested in doing myself (along with the rearsets, but I want to powdercoat them and I'm not confident enough yet to remove all that). Great looking bike, FZ6inNH!
For these, I took off the rad covers (two allen screws per) and sanded each lightly with 240 grit sand paper. I washed them in Dawn dish soap to clean them of dust from sanding and any oil/grease. Then, after drying with lint free cloth, I hit them with about 10 dustings of Rustoleum Gray primer (Automotive quailty, bought in a spray can at HD). I waited about 10 minutes between dustings. Then I hit them with a Rustoleum Cobalt Blue Metalic... dusted about ten times again until they were thoroughly covered, again waiting 10 minutes between coats. Mind you, I was doing a lot of other things during this process.
The rear pegs... Same process but I only used the flat black Rustoleum primer. Sanded, cleaned, dusted until coverage was complete. On the '07-'08 model, I have to warn you. When you take out the rear pegs, be
CAREFUL! There's a small plate between the peg and bracket. It has two notches in it and they only really fit one way (You'll understand when you see them.)
When you take the pegs out, be careful to wrap them with a small cloth BEFORE you pull them off after removing the bolt. On the side of each is a hole with a small spring covered by a ball bearing. This is what "Snaps" the peg in the up and down position by riding the ball bearing on the plate between the two notches. There is also a barrel spacer going through the peg that will fall out. The cloth around all of this is to make sure you don't drop any of these small parts or have the ball bearing roll off on you. Carefully stow all of these in a ziplock bag while you paint. If you have the PDF service manual, you can see the exploded view of how it all fits. If now, Ron Ayers has the microfiche with the exploded diagram as well.
Now, because of the mis-match in color, I stripped the rad covers (Two cans of brake cleaner took them ALL THE WAY to bare metal! w00t!), cleaned them up and did the flat black automotive Rustoleum again.
This winter, I'll remove the rad covers, four pegs, rearsets and top triple and take them all out for a perfect match metallic Cobalt Blue powder coating by a local pro. I'm going to swing over there at some point, explain what I want and get a quote from him.
