07 dual headlamp how to.

By strange coincidence I actually got round to doing the dual headlight mod myself yesterday. Course I had to take it for a test ride. It crossed my mind too that the left hand unit could be converted to allow HH.

On reflection though, I think that you would get a 'black' spot at short range, at about 20 foot or so in front of the bike. I'm not sure that it would be any worse than any machine with a single headlight though. Just something to consider before blundering on with the mod. :thumbup:

where did you get all your bits from mate ? obviously we don't have radio shack over here ... maybe maplins ?

Yeah, it was Maplins. To be honest they weren't that much use. You need a 0.250" female 'Flag' terminal to fit in the headlight plug - they don't do one. I modified a straight 250 terminal by flattening out & trimming the crimp & soldering the wire to it at 90 degrees. A bit of trial & erroe required, fortunately, I got it right first time. However, if you can get a Flag terminal, it saves a whole lot of pissing about.

The wire Maplin's sell by the metre, I just asked for something that would handle 12 Volts X 65 Watts. The wire supplied, IMHO, was a bit chunky compared to the stuff Yamaha use anyway. You need about 1.2m of cable, if you are going to run it 'tidy' around the front of the fairing & connect to the feed wire by the handle bar switch. I bought green cable at first, when I fitted it I thought it looked wrong. So, I nipped down to the local car parts dealer & got a reel of black wire for a couple of quid. I think it looks less obtrusive & is easier to hide as you wind it round the harness.

Black cable ties (zip ties), again a bit chunky for the job but the smallest they do is about 150mm.

Black heat shrink. It depends if you decide to cut the green/orange dot wire when splicing the feed, if you need heatshrink or not. Obviously, if you don't cut the wire, you can't feed the heatshrink tube over it. I bought the heat shrink, then decided not to cut the wire, just stripped back the insulation & soldered the feed wire to it. I used green insulation tape as I already had it.

I then used black insulation tape to bind the harness. It's a bugger to do it tidy, but possible if you're patient. I know somewhere in this thread waterproof insulating tape is mentioned, I think that must be an American thing, not something I've encountered.

Most of what I used, you should be able to get at a decent DIY car parts store. If you've got one nearby that does in-car audio, that might be the best bet. The electrical wholesalers by me where useless.

I spent ages trying to find the other end of the green wire to no avail. It disappears into the frame below the battery. Obviously, if that were accessible it would be the place to connect the feed wire to.

Tried 2 car parts shops ... No luck with the connector ! .. Tried Maplins .... They are bloody useless !! how can they call themselves an electronics specialist

Last ditch effort before I was gonna change the shape of a smaller connector was my local Yamaha dealer ... BINGO !! ... Gave me one for free and it was the genuine connector that they use... result

Chose to splice into the green with orange dots wire and it works a treat ...

Hey guys,
I decided to do the mod to my 2007 today. It all went as described until I cut open the wiring harness. There were two green wires, one dark green and one what I would call green. Neither of which had orange dots. They all had what I would call dark green dots. After some testing I found that the lighter green wire was the one I was after. I trimmed the the wire around it and tinned both ends and soldered them up. Once I got them all wrapped up and tidy I gave it a go and it works great. If you didn't know the mod was done you wouldn't be able to tell by looking at the wiring. I'm really happy with the turnout.

Yes, if you read the whole thread and watch the video, that is exactly what I describe. Don't mean to sound grumpy but this thread is getting OLD.
Also there is only one high beam, you left headlamp is low beam only, right is both high and low (or will be after you do the mod).

Don't run the low beam for the left to the right, or else you'll run both low and high at the same time.

I would do your mod, but plan on running alot of equipment and don't want to change the altinator every couple months. GW is on now so I will cut it shot and go listen!

Wow....that looks like more work than it was for me to mod my 2004. I didn' thave to take anything apart, it cost $2, and took 15 minutes.

It's the best non-go-fast-related mod I've done.

Thanks! One more question from the rookie though. Is there a difference in the brightness of the two lowbeams? It looked like it on the video or was it just the angle of the bike?

It's just the angles. Typically your right lamp will be angled a little higher (it is designed to be a highbeam after all), you can realign it easily enough...I think there is a thread around here somewhere on how to do that, if not check your owners manual, I know its in there.
