Just gettin started...

I am new to the Yamaha family... was riding an SV 650 and wanted a Yamaha so I bought a 2006 FZ6. I have yet to install the handlebar risers, touring windscreen, and lower fairing I just ordered. We all know it's a great bike on its own, but there is so much I want to customize. I could easily keep spending $$ on mods for a while.

Welcome to the Family. This is a great site to learn about our passion for the FZ6. I rode my buddy's SV 650 for a while before I got the FZ6, definitely I enjoyed the SV but after being on the FZ, it's a definite blast.

Welcome! Congrats on the great upgrade!!! I'd be interested to hear a review of your opinions of the two bikes.

Comfortwise, the biggest thing has been wind protection. The SV (naked version) had virtually none, while the FZ has a decent amount. Wind is a big factor here so I'm going a step further to install a dark smoke touring screen. The riding positions between the two are very close and if there was a difference I did not notice it.

Performancewise, the SV seems to be more powerful in mid-range. However, the FZ is much smoother and does not have a lurching effect that sometimes the SV can have when you throttle it in mid range (I rode a 2001 so maybe Suzuki has fixed the problem since then). I also like the FZ's fuel injection -- hated messing around with the choke feature on the SV because the first part of your ride was not as enjoyable.

How much riding have you actually done? If the answer is none, there are a number of bikes on the market that are far better suited to the first time rider. I'm not saying the FZ6 can't be used by a first time rider but this is generally not a good idea.
