Hi all,

After reading Bonemans excellent thread on converting the FZ6 to bi-xenon using projectors that fit into the stock headlamps, just wondered if the same thing would be possible on an FZ6N?

Can anyone confirm if the FZ6N uses a H4 bulb, and would there be enough room in the headlamp to take one of the H4 angel eye projectors?

Cheers all

I'm working on it right now, actually. It's the H4 bulb. My head lamp is in the oven this moment, and I'm pretty exited to see if it works.

Crap... I left it in the oven over night:D

Seriously though, the lens cover popped right off after 20 minutes in the oven at 100 degrees C.

And everythin works! I was worried that the headlamp wasn't deep enough to fit the projector. Those worries were just, as the clearance between the headlamp cover and projector is no more than a millimeter or two:eek:

If you go for this mod, be prepared to extend all the wiring, as there's no way you'll be able to place the ballast and the other black box anywhere near the headlamp. I have to put those two boxes under the saddle.

I haven't yet fitted everything back on the bike, but I tested all the wirings last night. And I won't be able to fit it until later today as I'm currently home alone with my 18 month old daughter.

Anyway, here are some pics of everything so far:

More will come later tonight, I guess;)

I thought one of the benefits of HID is that they don't create heat like normal bulbs. So I don't think that will be a problem.

Anyhoe, thanks for checking tis out! Maybe I'll do this mod myself.

@Capo79: Awesome work dude, looks spot on! Have you considered spraying the stock reflector matt black to really make the projector stand out? Good job on the wiring too, really looking forward to seeing the pics when fitted and compare the beam pattern.

@99vengeur: HIDs produce much more light at much less wattage and generate way less heat than incandescent bulbs, plus the large glass lens in the projector housing isn't the bulb itself, just a lens to focus the beam. The actual bulb isn't much bigger than a stock H4.

Hi, looks great but is it legal in the UK?

I have been doing some research over the past week with a number of suppliers in the uk and it seems the law is at best a little vague. The DOT have a specific article on the subject. On the face of the research I have done it appears it is illegal to modify an existing hallogen lamp to HID owing to reflector design issues. Little mention was made of projectors but as they are HID based and involve the modification of halogen lamps (at least as far as the articles I have seen on here) they are unlikely to pass a UK MOT test. The lamp has to be subject to independent testing and modifying an existing unit invalidates the original E mark approval.

I noticed an article in MCN this week with HID factory fitted option causing potential problems with blinding motorists, the reviewer in question seemed to have decided, on balance, the benefit of HID was offset by the problems he had experienced with upset car drivers flashing him, both head on and overtaking whilst using dipped beams. The benefit on main beam was described as being night and day but given the amount of traffic in the uk they could only be used for a few seconds at a time.

I guess you can fit to a new bike in the knowledge there will be no MOT test until the motorcycle is three years old. For those that are interested here is the MCN forum link, unfortunately I could not find a link to the article I refer to in this weeks mcn.
