Someone hit my bike!

In the parking lot at work, someone hit my bike with his car. We were parked next to each other, and when he was backing out of his spot, he cranked the wheel too soon and the front swung wide right into my bike. The good news is that the bike didn't fall over, it just pivoted around the sidestand.

The bike sustained some damage to the front fender and headlight, both of which will have to be replaced. The handlebars were pretty tweaked from the bumper catching my front tire, but just needed some aligning, and the forks are straight (verified by my mechanic), but the front axle is bent.





Overall, the damage is not too bad. It still sucks to look out the window and see your bike being spun about on the sidestand by some cage, but I'm happy that I wasn't on the bike and that it didn't fall over.

Yeah, he stopped and took a look with me. I didn't know him, but he works in the suite above mine. I actually saw the whole thing from my office window. I'll tell ya, once I saw it, I ran out the door pretty damn fast for someone who's recovering from a 1/2 marathon!

I got an estimate for the damage yesterday and the ball's in his court as to whether he wants to go through insurance or pay cash. He's a nice guy and was very apologetic, so I'm not expecting hassles.

Awesome! I'm surprised you didn't go out the window! Glad he stuck around and seems to be a stand-up guy. I hope it DOES go hassle-free for you!

No m/c parking near work until now. We do as of now; it's called me parking my bike on the sidewalk or even in the building lobby if I have to LOL.

Me and another guy usually share a spot, and that day, my friend, who was the furthest forward in the spot, left for lunch. So my bike was at the back of the stall, which probably made the stall look empty from the driver's seat of the car.

I already rode home; it wasn't too bad once I got the handlebars straightened out. They were pretty tweaked when I first hopped on the bike. Also, rode it to and from the dealership for a damage quote.

I'm still amazed that the axle bent. I don't see how that could happen without doing serious damage to the wheel.

It got hit hard enough to tweak the handlebars? What did they strike? Were the fork legs twisted in the clamps.... that's what I would have to think was making the bars off kilter.

Yeah, the shop took the whole front end apart and checked the wheel, rotors, and forks and they're all straight. Just the axle is bent.

You're right, the forks were twisted in the triple clamps. I had to loosen them to straighten out the handlebars; they were too out of alignment to ride that way. The handlebars didn't hit anything but the stop. I think it was when the guy's bumper caught the front tire that caused the tweaking. Tire being pushed one way plus the handlebars being against the stop - only one thing that can happen. Still surprised with that much force the forks didn't bend.

Hey, I'll bet a loud horn would have saved the bike! Since you were looking and with a remote horn button, you could have scared the crap out of him and prevented it!

Thanks Mick. Yeah, I'm surprised too. The bike did pivot around the centerstand and was pointing at a different angle than when I parked it, but she stayed upright :thumbup:

I did have the dealer check the sidestand for damage, since it seems like it took some stress, but that's okay too. Guess I'm pretty darn lucky considering the damage that could have happened...

So I park mine under the verandah right infront of the main office :thumbup:
