I have noticed that when shifting gears that how hard I push the shifter (up or down) does effect the clunk. Not just good or bad shifting or the amount of clutch or the rpms but the force of the shift. If I 'kick' it into gear its loud enough that I am embarassed, If I just 'ease' it into gear it is much quieter.

And not to start another oil topic, but this morning I was running late so I had to start before the bike was fully warm there was NO clunk until the bike warmed up. My assumption is the thicker oil helped.

Am I dreaming these things?

to run with your theory, what is the rating of the oil that you have in there and what is the temperature that you are experiencing outside?

60-65 degrees this morning... not sure on the oil since I haven't changed it since I bought it (that is fast approaching)... I would assume recommended yamahalube since I got it from dealer

Well, I am waiting for the 1st service and oil change, but for me it goes like this:

Cold at any revs = big clunk in 1st and 2nd

Warm under 4000rpm = big clunk in 1st and 2nd

Warm + carefully modulating the clutch = *much* less clunk

Warm + modulating clutch + high revs = No clunk

Kind of weird, as at service stations etc, it can be a bit embarrassing, but well, like Alfa Romeo would say, it is a 'feature' :D

Since I also ride a BMW (notoriously clunky shifter), I have no idea why this is!

I noticed sometimes it would and sometimes it wouldnt. the biggest difference i had was when i ditched the stock rubber dampened counter sprocket for a solid smaller one. even my girlfriend noticed the shifts were much smoother. also when racing up and shifting without the clutch it felt like there was a much more positive engagement. no flexing of the rubber........

I also have virtually no clunk when the engine is not fully warmed up. I am running AIMSOIL 10W30, and have about 3000KMs since my last change.

I have had the this problem mainly between 1st and 2nd, no matter whether cold or not. In another post on this forum the advise was given to preload the shifter a bit, and that have done it for me. If done properly there is virtually no clunk between the gears.

Tried this method last night... Huge improvement for me too.
