proper lane-splitting technique?

If I have to lane split in an emergency fine, and just because YOU do it with expertise don't fault me for not having your skills. Thats just arrogance and signs of an egomaniac. This was my opinion to post my comment. If you don't like it fine...don't scold me for not doing what you do. My opinion holds firm that lane splitting is dangerous mostly to cagers not bikers.

And I'm telling you you don't know what you are talking about. Your lack of experience with it clouds your judgment and opinions are fine providing the source of that opinion has enough experience to support the view.

thats not rly fair mate, all of us here are well versed in traffic-theory. you dont have to lanesplit to have a solid functional grasp of traffic theory.

actually it was finboz that posted the real video here it is [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lI8Oav3WBKM&feature=related"]YouTube - Lane splitting Los Angeles (normal speed)[/ame]

for help with lane splitting read my "lane splitting 101" thread

Just out of curiosity, have you ever split traffic? If not, what are you going to do one day when it may be your only out to a crash. I guess you'll figure it out when you need it right?

It's ILLEGAL in 49 states. We won't do it. Charlie, come on! Either do it in SoCal or not at all.

the 2nd vid doesnt look as dangerous but if someone changes lanes abruptly that would end badly. i find if u keep a space cushion in front and behind and make sure not to travel in blind spots ur alright.

where i live we dont get rush hour that badly. if i did i would cry.

News Flash, it's not "LEGAL" in 50 states and much like speeding it's only "ILLEGAL" if you get caught.....grin>>

Phew, I'm not ready for that yet.

Though mention of splitting at lights got me thinking...Illinois law for the purpose of making lane splitting illegal reads thusly:

"The driver of a 2 wheeled vehicle may not, in passing upon the left of any vehicle proceeding in the same direction, pass upon the right of any vehicle proceeding in the same direction unless there is an unobstructed lane of traffic available to permit such passing maneuver safely."

Could it be argued that traffic at a light is not moving, and is therefore not proceeding in the same direction as the motorcycle?

no it cant unless the judge is high.

if theyre facing the same way they are proceeding in the same direction

Man that's nothing. Somebody find a good clip of the 91 from Riverside to Orange or the 5 from the 605 into LA at 7 in the morning. Hey, how about the 10 from El Monte to downtown LA and the 4 level. Now that's serious stuff.

And..... Charlie, aren't you the one with the thread about all the tickets recently? So...... :Flip: :D

You know how many I've had on my bike? That would be ZERO.... Legal? Illegal? Killing a person is legal until we get caught?

BAD analogy!

knock on wood me too! only had two tickets in a car also first one was thrown out and second got reduced to failure to obey a traffic device.. Trust me I do not do the speed limit usually cruising in a 55mph at 66-75mph.... I see over 100mph every ride well more than once

You know what? After seeing the video slowed down and considering the traffic in CA lane splitting IMHO seems like the lesser of two evils. If I am moving, I at least have some control. I have been stopped on the interstate on my bike, and it is a damn scary feeling having a monsterous truck on one side, giant van in front, and another truck behind.
If the cagers are used to it, and well aware of the rules, it really seems to me to be a good idea. I was kinda against it, but heck. Have at it. It sure would be nice to be able to filter thru scottsville roads parking lot in the morning and afternoon. You just couldnt do it here. The drivers are actual raging maroons. My worry riding in Cali lane splitting if I was used to it, would be out of staters, tourists, and illegal drivers.

Devil's advocate says "by your definition, parked cars are also proceeding in the same direction"

if the parked cars were in gear and were stopped only because someone was applying the brake...then yes, my definition would apply to parked cars as well. :)

and as for the lane splitting im happy i dont live somewhere where i would have to think about it. traffics pretty good where im at.

Have been lane splitting for 20 years, is the main reason i take my son to school on my bike. It is a 15km journey that takes an nearly an hour in my car in peak hour traffic, on the bike it takes me 20minutes.

I dont go between cars that are moving, i have been known to go ride past the traffic down the outside of cars on the opposite side of the road....only if i can see that there is nothing coming the other way! I never do it at more than 15km/h.

Apart from the time saving issue, getting to the front at Traffic lights is important i think, because you can see that all other cars have stopped in all other directions when you get the green light. It also removes the danger of being rear ended whilst stationary at the rear of a line of cars.

Where i live it is not strictly legal, but if you do so with common sense, police will leave you be. But i do admit if i see a Police Car, i do refrain from this practise.

I stay in south africa .... and lane splitting is technically legal here.
If we didn't split, we'd never get anywhere :/
Your cagers are WAY better behaved than ours, changing lanes seems our national sport here .... usually we advise to run between 20-30 KM/h faster than traffic. That's about right for really slow traffic. Once the traffic loostnes up a little, can take it easily faster than that ... despite stupid cagers surprising you.

This side, it's common for bikes to take free traffic at double the cager speed ... ie pulling 160 (km/h) through traffic travelling at about 80-100 (KM/H)
:Flip: It's the only fun we have in africa.

At to US law .... you still got states where helmets are optional WTF? Our laws are pretty good, just the enforcement that is optional.

That is why I choose to do it here in Las Vegas. But one of these days, I'm bound to come across a police cruiser that is nestled in along with the rest of the vehicles that I split orrrrr to my surprise join a police motorcycle sitting at the front that I couldn't see until I got to the front after filtering.

That rider in the video is WAY too inhibited. He splits lanes like a grandma and needs to take a reckless driving course or something. It's probably his second day ever on a CA freeway and that's why he looks so inhibited. Everbody knows that in able to ride on a CA freeway you have to be agressive and that the rider in video still needs to learn how to ride agressively. Please don't accept that all CA riders are like that guy in the video because he is riding way too conservative. Yeah, I'm just poking fun at some of you because some of you seem to get locked up over lane splitting. Just as some cagers are reckless, idiot, unskilled and overconfident drivers that guy doesn't reflect on the rest of us who lane split correctly. That idiot lane splitter, just like the no-t-shirt COPS video idiots doesn't relect on the rest of us in CA. It seems that some people twist off too easily over things. The guy in the video is an idiot. He's probably featured in a coming COPS video. Lane splitting isn't a reckless maneuver unless one does it, as with all other driving manuevers, as an idiot. Come to CA and you can see for yourself.
