He climbed the deck on the second story of the house, opened the screen door of the small screened in porch, and was attempting to force open the glass door of the room I was sleeping in. He had turned to try another door when I was loading since mine was locked. I checked the scene outside and did not find him so my guess is he saw me, my plan being to get a good look at him- I didn't want him coming back to try it again as this was at my parents house where I was staying for the week. He had ransacked an unlocked vehicle in the driveway, and the cops found his footprints at multiple doors. He was not caught, although we strongly believe he is the same person serving time for theft, identity theft, and drug offenses. So yeah, had he entered the house forcibly I would have been glad I had a gun. Amanda is a gun toting fashion model currently finishing her masters in badassness.

Scary... but you did not have to defend yourself or your family using your gun, so the answer to my question was "NO", not "YES".

What scares me is what if the dude had a gun too? Are you going to take your chances and start a gun fight with a drugged up bad guy? What if there are 2 other bad guys hidden on the other side of the house with guns too? To me, the safest bet is to call the cops and give the guy(s) what they want... 99.9% of the time these dudes aren't breaking in your house to come after you, they're breaking in your house to steal something so they can buy drugs... To me, playing hero and taking the risk to start a gun fight in my house (where my family is) to protect some materialistic crap is not worth it... I understand the other side of the argument as well though...

I don't own a gun nor do I plan to buy one. However, this summer I took a pistol course (it was an NRA class). I don't think that you could call me an NRA supporter, but I will tell you what...that course was great. It taught me about revolvers and pistols. On the next day we went to a range and shot with a .357 magnum and a glock 17. Talk about fun... I learned that shooting is a skill (and one that I don't have yet). So, I still don't plan to own a gun, but I do plan to go to a range and rent one and shoot again because it is fun.

Agreed... One should no more be criticized for not having a gun, than for exercising one's rights. It's closed-minded. "I have chosen not to own a gun" is much different than "No one should own a gun". This will be my last post on this thread as it's beginning to fade over to "underground politics" territory. It's been enjoyable nevertheless.

In terms of home safety, guns are a deterrent, not necessarily a solution. I like that criminals have to think twice about breaking in. Crime rates tend to go up in areas where guns are banned, because there's no fear. Criminals know there can't be someone armed is inside. So, Wavex, it's enough that your neighbors may or may not own guns; you certainly don't need to if you don't want to :thumbup:

Gun control laws, by definition, only apply to law-abiding citizens, leaving only criminals and the government with guns.

To the point of our founding fathers, it's going to be a heck of a lot harder for the military/police to forcibly take over an armed populace, and thereby preserves our freedom. The mere presence is one of the many contributors to our lasting freedom. Machiavelli recognized this way before the nation was founded.

*edit* just to "walk the talk" I have an antique double-barrel shotgun over the fireplace that I doubt fires, no ammo in the house....and two young, curious boys. My wife and I have pistol licenses, but no pistols (only to prevent my father-in-law's guns being seized if he passes unexpectedly). For me, I can support the right to keep and bear arms without keeping them myself, believing it safer for my family that I don't, and see nothing contradictory about that.

i have never had a situation that a gun has saved me yet, but i have had several situations that i have been seconds away from needing it.

my rule is... its better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it

when we use to live in our old condo, our bedroom was on ground level, with the window facing towards the woods, i woke up at 3 am one morning (the day before we were suppose to move) for some reason i jumped up and saw a shadow by the window, This was in no way an area that people should be walking, i immediatly grabbed my handgun from the safe and just waited, nothing turned out from it, but i found out two days later that it was a homeless person who was knocking on peoples doors attempting to gain access... not a self defense, but it couldnt get much closer.

also while living in that condo... i was woken up around 2 to someone walking in the door, again.. i grabbed the gun... i heard the door open and close, now my wife was sleeping next to me, and her brother was sleeping in the next room, i walked out, and saw someone sitting in the dining room. i pointed it and waited, he had his back to me, and i couldnt quite put it together. he was sitting at the computer, it didnt make sense. i stood there aiming for what seemed like minutes, i finally lowered it, and said hey, he turned around and it was one of her brothers friends, somehow he had a key and no place to sleep that night... now, i was nowhere close to shooting him. but had it been someone that meant harm, i would have been in trouble..

and although this is an old story, it still applies, when i was 18 and use to live with my mom, we lived about 2 miles from a detention center (prisons little brother) there were more than a couple times the prisoners would escape since it was just minimum security jail, used for people serving less than 18 months, or awaiting trial. once they caught the guy about 100 yards from my house, of course i always locked up and kept a shotgun in hand...

let me say. i think you guys have been pretty civil with each other.

i will soon own a handgun. my father-in-law is giving me one for christmas. i've been out to shoot it a few times and it is quite fun. i'll post a pic after christmas (assuming this thread is still opened by then) when i have it.

i will say i hope i never have to think about using it for self-defense. for me it doesn't come down to what is the best way to protect your house. it has more to do with my core values. i'm a follower of Jesus and take his words seriously. i believe in turning the other cheek and as a result i'm a pacifist. but i also have kids i'm responsible for.

at this point, i'm telling myself that i'm accepting a gift from my father-in-law and i'll get involved in another hobby (cause i have so much time on my hands). hopefully i'll never have to go beyond that.

Fair point. I won't lie and say that I feel much better about it. I don't think everybody that displays it does so in good humor. But I now appreciate that not everybody takes it so serious. Thanks for the perspective.

Or looking to rape somebody. Or they just want your TV, but now that you've seen them they can't have a witness. The point is, you cannot know their intent. Trusting in the good nature of a criminal is a bad call.

And if the criminal has a gun, then at least my being armed levels the playing field.

Frankly, most CCW permit holders are better shots than the average gun owner. So if you're worried about a Hollywood style gunfight breaking out, it's not likely to happen.

Most confrontations between a criminal and a CCW permit holder ends with the citizen brandishing or pointing the weapon at the criminal, and the criminal backing down. Of the ones where shots are fired, the criminal is usually dead pretty quickly.

You can call the cops if you want, but before you make that your official policy, I suggest that you look up the average police response time in your neighborhood.

What do you do for the city? Are you part of the local SWAT team?

I am a road cop and part of our ERT (emergency response team). Basically the same as SWAT but the politicians think ERT sounds like we aren't going to mess people up so bad. Kinda like calling a swimming pool an aquatic training tank to get it in the budget. In this world of political correctness its all how you word things.
