My bike has 0.3 miles on it, I dropped it, and now it won't start. HELP!!

The dealer may not have charged the battery all the way up. The cells in the battery may have come loose in the drop (faulty battery). And cars now day with the new battery technology will not charge the battery all the way up they need to go on special pulse chargers for 16 to 20 hours. When i left my parkers on on my bike, jump started it and then rode to work 20 minutes the battery did not have enough in it to start again. Glad to hear you got it started, bummer to hear you dropped it./

Actually Aussie, you may be onto something.

It also could be that the battery connectors are a bit loose. Once my bike would not start, I checked the battery leads and saw that the connectors were screwed on. But after closer examination it turned out that one side was 1 turn away from being tight. THis caused a poor connection, after tightening the connection my bike fired right up.

No, the regulator/rectifier module has a peak output of 22A/14.0V at ~2200 rpm. I tested the charging system a few years ago and posted the results on SBN. In summary, a stock 04 FZ6 w/dual headlight mod draws approx. 18A of system resources, leaving only 4A (52W) for battery charging and/or accessory loads. You can rev the motor all you want but the R/R will limit output, even though the alternator voltage continues to rise.

Can I have the dual headlight mod and a radar detector (passport escort) and still keep my battery charged, based on what you said? If there are no other electrical mods...

Problem solved!

It was as most had suspected-- just a weak battery. Phew! I jump-started the bike again tonight, but this time instead of simply letting it idle, I revved it up a bit (2k-4k rpm) for about 15-20 min, and when I shut it off I was able to start it right back up. Just to make sure I turned it off and on a few times before tightening up the tank...

Thanks to everyone (except "DoucheBaginDenmark") for all of the useful input, it was great to have somewhere to turn to.

My camera just died on me, so I'll post some pics as soon as I get a new one!

So where does the 5K figure that reputable memebers like 04fizzer and rennsport always mention come from? I thought the manual mentioned this.

Either way, you need ot be holding it above 2200 or just riding it and keeping it above 2200, right?

We all drop bikes at one time or another BUT when you got your new bike was you not just that little bit careful when you first got it???

Its when you get used to the bike and confident that you make mistakes and it ends up on the floor.

If its on the floor during the "careful" stage, it does not sound good.

The service manual states a value for the "charging system" of 14 V/310 W at 5,000 r/min. This is what most people seem to refer to. My own measurements show that this max. output occurs at a lower engine speed, and I am confident in the results I obtained as being accurate. The voltage across the 3 poles of the alternator rises smoothly with engine speed, without any limits up to 10K RPM, where I stopped measurement. The R/R is the control point, using internal circuitry to switch the output on-off at the value listed above. There is no way to adjust this device from the outside, and I would imagine it would require component changes on a circuit board.

I varied the electrical load during my test by turning signals and high beams on and off, and I observed that even as the current load would change the output leaving the R/R would stay steady. The R/R would begin switching at 14V regardless of load, and the excess output from the alternator is dissipated as heat from the heatsink.

The only conclusion I could come up with is that there is just 4A of headroom for charging the battery, powering a heated vest, etc. If someone wanted to take a R/R from a different bike (like a FJR) and wire it in, there would be more potential current, but I have not tried this as I don't need it.

So I just went outside to look about roughing up my tires a bit (I think I'm going to use a light-duty wire brush) only to notice some sort of oily residue toward the edges of the rear tire!! Aghhh! (I'm thinking chain lube or something from when they assembled the bike...) those freakin bastards. No wonder I went down the first time I tried to lean it over! This probably also explains what happened in that famous YouTube video...

This is my life.

You mean I-15.....I-17 runs n-s from Mexico and ends in Flagstaff, AZ.

I'm not trying to be sarcastic, make sure your kick stand is up. Check the ground on your battery. Put the motorcycle in neutral (this is not necessary to start it, but if it happens to try to kick over while you're in gear, you'll probably be taken off guard and drop the damn thing again.) I have dropped my motorcycle 3 times from a stand still, and then I have found my motorcycle on it's side after leaving it outside unattended. If your bike does start after having been layed down, be prepared, you may see a little white smoke out from the exhaust...always let your bike idle for a minute to pay attention to any potential problems before taking off agian. Best of luck to anyone who does drop their motorcycle.
