Random none starter

Hello all. My S2 is messing about, some days it won't start. Starter spins lively and sometimes pops with missfire but doesn't run. If I leave it for an hour or so it will fire up straight away. Other days it isn't a problem and starts straight away. It's a 2007 model and has 62000 miles on the clock.

Could be many things…but before I start playing the guessing game, what is the general state of tune of the bike? While it likely isn’t things as simple as spark plugs or an air filter it gives me an idea of general maintenance of the machine. Did this problem start after maintenance or even a fall, or did it just appear? Lastly, how’s the inside of your fuel tank look? Do you see any corrosion?

Haven't looked in the tank. The bike has been serviced regularly.

The problem just started a couple of weeks ago, I use the bike daily to and from work and it's done it about 4 times.

The next time it happens, take note if the fuel pump is whining/running both before the start attempt and after. Is this bike parked outdoors?

Yes it's under a cover on my drive at night but stands in the yard at work uncovered for about 7 hours a day.
