Okay, I was on the BMW not the FZ6, but there were times when I really wished I had brought the FZ6. Some REALLY great roads out that way...like CO-90, CO-141, the road through Colorado National Monument Park, UT-128. Now I want to go back. Fun! Fun! Fun!

Great pics.
CO 141 Oh Ya Baby! What a great road! Would be hard to keep it under 85 on the FZ6 for sure.

Arches was 95+ when I was there, looks cooler in your pics.

All those final drives made it? :)

Wait, were you there last weekend? I swear I saw your bike.
Next time anyone wants to go out there, let me know. I know some amazing places out there.

Great pics, Moab is an amazing place. The road into Canyonlands NP has some amazing twists in it.

Fantastic pictures...it brings back powerful memories! Yer V-Strom 1000 looks suited for the task and perhaps throwing in a dirt road or two for good measure.

Another option for many Texans is to trailer their small sport-bike bike to the final destination and then riding out from there in all directions. That way you still have a car w/trailer in case of trouble and you also avoid the long-dreaded hot, windy ride out of Texas on the endless miles of flat, boring roads to get to the good stuff.

Beautiful scenery. Was it hot?

It was hot the first two days - high's into the mid-90's - but the third day was quite pleasant, in the high 70's. Those of us from SoCal and South Texas were okay, but we did have some folks from the north who suffered a bit.

We had a great trip, close to 50 folks showed up. Some trailered so that they could bring two bikes: on-road and off-road. Some great eats in that town too! I left Houston on Friday, got to Moab mid-day on Sunday; we rode the local areas for 3 days - Mon, Tues, Wed - and then I headed for home on Thursday, got to Houston on Friday.

LOL! Yep! lots of BMW's there, no final drive failures. But we did have several failures, including a failed chain on a V-Strom, a clutch slave cylinder (my bike: see write-up on this in my blog), a coil on a BMW GS, carburetor rebuild in the parking lot on a DR, and the list goes on. Wouldn't be an adventure without these things happening.

It was plenty hot while we were there: in the mid-90's Monday and Tuesday (the day I was in Arches). A front blew through Tuesday afternoon (no rain, just really strong winds) and the temps were cooler on Wednesday, down in the mid to high 70's.

If you haven't already, you should ride through Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction CO at the north end of CO-141. Some really tight, steep switchbacks going up the mountain, then incredible switchbacks and S-curves with fabulous views riding through the park to the north entrance, which of course means more tight and steep switch backs to get back down the mountain.

CO-141 is a GREAT road! 65-70 mph on those curves, for sure! Not too sure about the 85 mph though. We ran into a few, er, obstacles along the way including a large herd of cows in the middle of the road, an SUV stopped dead in the middle of the road around a blind curve to gawk at some bighorn sheep, and then there was this:

I got to Moab on Sunday afternoon, May 10 and our group pretty much took over the Inca Inn and Adventure Inn on the north end of town. We rode the area Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Not sure if you saw my white BMW but it's possible. I definitely want to go back.

Thanks Fred. I was on the white BMW, not a V-Strom. The BMW was definitely suited to the task of riding the paved roads, but not so good on dirt.

Several in our group did trailer their small dual-sport bikes out there, and one rider from Colorado even trailered two bikes: one for dirt, one for street. Riding 600-700+ miles just to get out of hot, windy Texas just seems to be our fate, doesn't it? :D

Thanks, Brenda! I did Zion and that area a couple of years ago and loved it. Was really glad this opportunity came up to ride the Moab area and see some different parts of Utah and far western CO.

When I get out that way again, I'll try to remember your kind offer. Of course, if you ever get my way, let me know.
