Do leathers get ruined if caught in the rain??

I look at the weather report every morning and luckily here in SD its sunny 90% of the year. But as we all know weather reports are not 100% accurate.

So if i ride to work and there is a freak storm that gets me absolutely soaked. Will my leathers be ruined?

I rode over 300 miles one day in torrential rain in my Dainese two piece and when I got home I just hung it up and it dried. Perfect.

Rode with my leather jacket in the rain today, hung up, dried.... You can use special product on it that helps "weatherproof it" as some leathers can fade over time, but the odd shower i think your fine, my leathers have held up with no protectant :thumbup:

Excellent news thanks!!!. I didnt want to shell out money for rain gear or new leathers since im going to just drive the hooptie if there is a chance of rain :BLAA:

Depends on how you consider the word ruin.

After Kevlar, leather will offer the best abrasion strength. However, it will weaken overtime everytime it gets wet.

This is why I lean towards Motoport kevlar gloves and air mesh pants. I just throw it in the wash or lately, I've been getting that pressure washer out at work and use it wash my air mesh pants.

My leather gloves soaked up what seemed like 15 pounds of water on a 1 hour pouring rain ride. I was sure they were gone.
Next day was sunny and breezy.. I left them outside all day and by evening they were good as new! :thumbup:

Maybe not ruined... But.... Have you seen the episode of Friends where Ross goes to a chick's apartment, sweats in his leather pants, takes them off and then can't get them back on?

The reason I don't have their jackets is because they are so ugly, so I tend to compromise a bit when it comes to jackets.

Their new Kevlar Winter Gloves look okay. I will probably get that soon.

Eh... not so much. As Vegas stated, over time they can weaken, but you would probably have to ride daily in the rain for a few weeks/months before that happened. I've actually known some WERA riders who would wear new leathers in the shower and then let them dry so they would be a better fit.

My jacket is 10 years old... No shrinkage or wear to be seen. Just my .02

I've crashed in textile three or so times. Each time the bit that made contact with the ground shredded up and if I was in for a bigger slide I'd have had some nasty rash.

Leather I've crashed the same jacket and pants multiple times and it holds up fine. I rode that leather in rain for years too. Water is a non-issue in a practical sense.

Leather > Textile IMO

Nope but they are still attached to the hide at that point

The only way to test this theory is to soak a cow and throw it off the back of a flatbed pickup on the highway.

yeah because we all know that normally cows are kept indoors out of the rain and snow and other inclement weather.

leather suits only work if the accident occurs in 70 degree temps with the sun shining and the birds chirping and double rainbows all the way. :Flash:


Everything wears out but getting caught in the rain hasn't hurt my leather suit or textile suit. if leather was so sensitive that a little bit of water would destroy it (sure extremes of anything will ruin just about anything) then manufacturers would not make them out of leather, especially for track days.

I wear insulated leather gloves for colder weather from a cruiser shop super comfortable and I have ridden in the rain with them. Did great till the saturation point.

No, your leather gear will not get ruined by rain.
I rode many times over the past 3 years in heavy rain conditions and my gear is like new.

The only thing you have to do is to let it dry in a sunny breeze.
NEVER use a heat source to dry your gear, or you will damage it.
(hair blower, radiator etc)
