I have an 08' FZ6 right outta the crate- this is the first bike I have ever owned but have riden for awhile...
I want to make my exhaust sond better & louder- The area I live in is high traffic and I am finding with the quiet stock exhaust people really dont hear me and we all know its mostly the drivers ignorance that gets us in trouble....
Any tips? I dont have alot of cash so cheap tips lol....

:BLAA:

That's what the horn's for brother!

Use that whenever you think someone might not see you and get a reflective/bright vest to wear over your jacket. They start at like $20. That would be the cheapest way to be noticed on the road.

People MIGHT hear you, but probably not. The main reason that relying on sound isn't a great idea is that there is no depth perception there. Visual is the key. Reflective/bright vest, high beams, horn.

You might find something cheap with the exhaust, but in the end, visual is where it's at.

I went to o'reilly auto and got a high flow muffler. Part number 50051. And 2 inch flex tube. And a 2" OD to 1 3/4" ID reducer. Reducer goes where stock muffler clamps to cat pipe and muffler fits perfectly where stock one goes. Sounds good. Not too loud but louder then stock. Only downside is it is a single exit so you have to trim the plastic in the back. Or you can find an offset inlet dual exit muffler that is the same size.

Do you have pics of that setup? I've often wondered how well a car muffler would work on FZ's! Or any motorcycle for that matter. lol I'll bet it sounds pretty dang nice. EDIT : Nevermind, just saw your post in the welcome section. LOL

To Chizzle : If you want an exhaust for cheap, keep an eye out on the For Sale section on the forums, as used exhausts come up often, and they're usually priced pretty well. As for exhaust noise as a safety feature? Debatable at best. lol You'll see many arguments from both sides. I say if you want an exhaust for the noise and looks, go for it(I know I did lol). But like Gothenburg stated, visibility will do much more for you, as well as defensive riding skills.

Sound = Safe seems, to me, to be be people convincing themselves to justify having a louder bike.

Agreed. I have the Two Brothers CF pipes on my Fizzer, probably the loudest slip-ons one can have installed... I was doing 8000 RPM in the left lane on a busy highway today, pipes were humming with extreme volume, didn't stop d-bag in the Dodge Durango from barging into my lane without looking. A quick combination of horn, downshift, flipping the bird, and rocketing away sure got his attention though. :Flip:

Having a loud bike = awesome.

Having a loud bike = safety??

Loud bikes are fine i guess, if you like that kind of thing. Using it for any kind of "safety" is delusional, don't do that.

Plenty options if you have cash.

But seriously? That machine is very well designed as is, brand new. And frankly while other guys are the thunder that comes down road, i'm just the wind ;-)

And i'll kick their ass while i'm at it.

Point is loud isn't safer or faster, it's noisier thats all.

My FJR has the stock quiet pipes on it.

I have Scorpions on my FZ6 without the DB killers on it. IMHO, its not obnoxiously loud at lower RPM's, higher RPM's, different story..

I can safely safe, without reservation, that most vehicles around the FZ, WITH THE LOUDER PIPES, notice me considerably more than the FJR as they'll turn and look when they hear me coming up, etc.

A non paying attention cager at a green light with no on coming traffic will go, with a slight rev on the FZ6 as well..

i quite like the leo vince pipes on mine, bit of a fiddle to fit with my givi rack but they sound awesome, it's like having a new bike.

"If loud pipes save lives, imagine what learning to ride that thing would do!"

Personally, if I'm in my truck listening to the music, I can't hear loud pipes until the bike is in front of me. And my truck has no sound proofing at all; rolling down a window actually makes it harder to hear because the wind noise is higher, but the sounds aren't really any louder.

Then imagine sound proofed luxury cars. They really can't hear you. I notice people notice me more with my projectors, and if they don't I can flick my highs on and off a few times and suddenly they really notice me. Should it be "Bright lights save lives"? :don'tknow: Because I've nearly been hit in a bright vest.

My point is, it's easier to just pretend that every car is going to pull out in front of you, or change lanes into you and adjust your position/speed accordingly. In my mind, if you need to rev your engine, or honk your horn, then you weren't planning far enough ahead.

I live in Jacksonville, FL. We have old people, college kids, young dumb sailors, soccer moms, plenty of teenagers that want to race, and police that don't really care how fast you drive. Maybe not the worst place to ride, but it's nowhere near the best. After a month of having an "Oh S***" moment every time I rode, the MSF SEE strategy finally clicked when Keith Code was talking about his "wide eyes" deal. Since then, I haven't had an "oh s***" moment in 2 months.

Have people pulled out in front of me? Yes, but I had already made plans on what to do, and then just excecuted that plan when they did. No panic, and I only honked the horn in lieu of the finger when I ride by. Have people tried to change lanes into me? Yep, but I already had decided that I'm going to be fully in front of or behind cars beside me, so when they change lanes without looking, they don't hit me. And I usually just flip them the bird.

But still practice your swerve and quick stops.

+1 on the above 100%.

Anything to be more seen/heard helps, Stebal horn, louder exhaust(IMHO), Hyper brake lights, high beam on during the day and as you post, expect the cage to NOT SEE YOU and always have a way out.. Practice too!!!
