I would like to apologize for my comment....first of all I misunderstood the mod and second lazamus is right...as the saying goes..to each his own...if this mod will be used by others or not...he still made his own mod...so my apologies

oh your comment was fine. n00bs like you are easily ignored anyway :BLAA:

:D

I fail to see where the problem is with just using the key  You need it to open the cap & it stays there while your filling , close the cap pull the key out , pay for fuel & ride away... Did I get this all wrong ?? :don'tknow:

Having a hard time understanding WHY ???

Don't feel alone, I don't see the point either.

The short answer is because it's really annoying the way it is. There's no reason that the cap should not close and lock without the key.

Are they worried about you accidentally locking your key inside the gas tank?

Fred

P.S. Having said that, it will now happen to me.

I personally wouldn't do this. Props to you for figuring it out! Here is my problem. Ignition on while fueling... What if you happen to have a wire rub bare and have a direct ground..... Starting to fuel hit the key.... spark + Gas vapors = poof.... Just a thought..

Now that is a good point!

Doesnt bother me about having to lock it with a key, but thsnks for sharing yr mod.

BTW, I dont think anyone was trying to deflate the newbie, they just didnt see a need for the mod.

All good

I see a benefit... I have a Speedpass for Exxon/Mobil and I cannot tell you the number of times I have pulled up to the tank, took my key and unlocked the cap... after the face-palm, I lock the cap, take the key with the Speedpass and light up the damned gas pump, then unlock the cap for a second time!

I'm sold! Thanks for the idea!!

while i can see the need to point out a 'worst case scenario', in reality that is more than highly improbable. most wires are in front of or underneath the tank. the filler, and said vapors, are on top and the vapors are immediately diluted into the open atmosphere. while the vapors are indeed heavier than air, by the time they reach the space where a bare wire would be (buried underneath metal and plastic), the dilution would be well below the necessary flashpoint of the fuel vapors (assuming dead-calm winds for the worst case scenario to work). also, by the time the vapors got there, the theoretical spark has long since occurred being that the spark will only occur when the circuit is energized.

look, im all about safety, and i welcome opposing views to any modification. but with all the gallopies out there on our roads, if this were a likely proposition, it would happen way more often than it does. the real danger at the pump is static electricity, not vehicle electricity. ive performed this mod on all of my bikes since the late 80's and ive fueled up thousands of times, seeing as i average 25k miles per year, and i have yet to blow myself up (at the pump at least!)

and at this point, if youre still very worried about random combustion, dont turn your ignition circuit on...just do the mod because you like to tinker and to save wear on your key

last point, ive seen two pump fires in my 10 years as a police officer. neither of them were 'poof'. pump fires (gas fires) flash quickly, then burn so long as the fuel source is there generally leaving you plenty of opportunity to run away with little more than some singing. dont believe me? google gas station fires and watch for yourself.
discuss...

Tsk Tsk... aren't the simple instructions given to never fill a can while on the vehicle? geeeez. talk about the Darwin award

Mod doesn't work on my BMW, oh wait BMW already allow the petrol (gas) cap to shut without the key :Flip:

Although I must admit having being used to the FZ6 I hadn't thought to try shut the cap without the key until my mate pointed it out to me :banghead:

thanks for the vid. thats exactly what i was talking about...a quick flash, then steady burn. dude ran away without injury.

fb400, its only darwin if youre not paying attention to what youre doing. but then again, what isnt? what instructions do you refer to? the ones at the gas station that state not get IN your car when filling? if you keep reading, it goes on to say that if you get IN your vehicle, you must de-static before touching the pump. some places even have a de-static pad for you to touch for that purpose. the only 'vehicle' i sit on ON is the bike. i dont sit ON my car to fill it.

i never get off the bike to fill, and my balls are still intact. keeping your eye on the fill hole is pretty important though. sounds like your prone to a short attention span...perhaps this mod isnt for you. thanks for chiming in though.
