I HATE it when my bike looks like THIS, when it looks like THIS out

Steering head bearing started feeling funny awhile back and now its time to change.....and its gorgeous outside....Im sad


On a good note, It'll be nice to ride a bike that has a nice fluid steering motion,it was getting rough, but I kept procrastinating due to the great weather we've been having on the West coast.

As I suspected the lower bearing was completely dry and corroded. The upper bearing was fine, but the nut holding them together was completely loose(I guess thats where the shuddering was coming from..;p)
I'll have her back together asap so I can enjoy this weather!!

That tank holder is pretty cool. When I was working in that area, I had opposing bungee cords trying to keep it in the upright position but not too upright to yank out the fuel pump wires. It was a tenuous situation at best.

Why did you take the fairing apart?

When I rebuilt mine recently I reassembled the entire fairing including screen and mirrors and just bolted it back on. It's a lot easier than trying to reassemble it on the bike.

Wow! That bearing looks horrible! So, the nut was loose? Ok folks! Time to dig out the torque wrenches and start backing things off and applying proper torque!

So, did you clean up that bearing with some degreaser to get a good hard look at the surfaces? I'd like to see a shot of it totally cleared of gunk if you can.

Also, did you get the All Balls to replace these with?

Sorry she's hurting and you can't take her out! But glad she'll be safer when you do! :thumbup:

Holy crap Laz... that head bearing looks like crap! Good thing you are taking care of it though. Out of curiousity, why did you disassemble the entire front end of the bike? I'm pretty sure you don't have to do that to get to the head bearing.

I have to take the lights apart..something is loose in there plus I'm putting some LED's inside. I removed the 2 bolts to the fairing stay and removed the whole assembly in one shot and yea, AllBalls are going in as replacements

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention that I just rolled 14,000 km and it was buggered at probably 10 or 11,000....
