R6R forks - doable?

Now if I took the bike apart, I wouldn't be able to ride for at least a month. I'll wait till the winter. There is also the other part that I'll need a Ohlins rear shock to go with the new front forks. I don't want the bike to be unstable with good suspension in the front, and crap in the rear.

Oic, sweet, yeah, time starved I know all about it. Fortunately for me my last contract just finished, so I've got loads of spare time until the next one starts :)

Just got the top triple delivered today, it's officially the first part I have for this mod! I can't take my eyes off it lol Good point about the rear suspension as well. Another thing to add to the list of fun.

Tick tock tick tock until the forks show up and I'll have something to take to the engineers, it really couldn't happen soon enough, I'm bursting to get this done!
 
Update: Rotors w/ brake pads purchased, local manufacturer (Queensland), Metal Gear. :thumbup:

Still waiting on the forks!

Nice one, where are you at? What did you do about the center shaft on the lower triple connecting to the FZ6 frame? I'm gonna bag all me bits up, take 'em to a local engineer who specialises in motorbike frames and take lots of notes while he, hmm, 'expands' my shopping list! lol
 
The forks have arrived! Hooraay! :cheer::cheer:

Inside some serious packaging they were gleaming. It was no problem for me to remove said packaging and I was glad that it took some effort. A bit of an indication as to how much effort went into boxing them up that way :D

I've given them the eye over and they look like they're in good nick, to my untrained eye anyways. Is there anything in particular I should look for before I leave feedback for the seller? Some method to do a quick check for straightness? There are some tiny markings in the tops of both forks, looks like they were made by adjusting tools, should I worry about them? The oem triple clamp I bought doesn't fit snugly, it seems the tops of the forks are further from the center than the bottom (making a very very slight V), is this normal?

1 more tick in quite a few boxes I have :rockon::rockon:
 
I jiggled the bottoms of the forks around to pull them apart a little after taking the triple tree off, slipped the triple back on and the triple clamp slid right on. I can twist the forks right the way around w/o any extra rubbing on either triple. I think that this is a good sign, because if they were bent at all they would have pressed harder on one side whilst I was twisting them.
 
Getting there... The only way that is possible, incrementally!

I took the forks down to my local yamaha dealership, the guys there are great, even let me use their workshop a few times. One of the mechanics there took a quick look at the forks and he said that apart from taking them to pieces they look ok. He also suggestd I take the front wheel off the fz6 and bung it on the forks to see how it fits. He even lent me the tools to do it!

Well, they fit perfectly! Tight as, not a wiggle - and that's without tightening a single nut/bolt. Not so tight that the wheel doesn't spin, it sits just snug. Nothing touches the discs and I think the forks look like they're sposed too.

I'm really looking forward to taking the bike and these bits down to the engineer now, see what he says.

MRGM, I do not want to hijack this post but just to make sure what you are saying below is that if I do not want to change the whole front but only the triple from an R6 so I can have clip ons on my FZ6 (2008)... I need some spacers for the triple holes as they are a bit larger?

Are those spacers somehow available or do I need to get to a machinist to have them custom built?

The bottom of the steering stem on the FZ is about .050" too small to press into the R6 lower triple. You need to machine off a little bit at the bottom, add a press fit bushing (which I would also weld on the bottom edge), and machine that down to the correct size.

Then there's just the spacer for the top triple to match the stem as long as you're going to run clip ons. Or you can buy a top triple for the R6 that has the handlebar provisions already on it (I saw one for sale around $550). Or you can have a whole new top triple made.

I plan on machining my own top triple. I have some FZ1 handlebar risers that I'll use.

You cannot use the triple from the R6 with the FZ forks. The diameter is totally different.

If you want to run clip-ons, just remove the handlebars and get some clip-ons that fit. Leave the triple alone, it won't look the best but it will work.
 
:confused::( I see!!! and of course I can not remove/cut off the handlebar mounting as its made of cast iron...

As well if you can answer this... the holes on R6 triple are the same place as the FZ6 but just not wide enough or are they off as well? I mean if the 2 are symmetrical just but with 2mm difference, there might be a chance you can use it a a matrix to build another custom one altogether.

R6s top triple would be the same size as the FZ6 I would assume, considering that the forks are interchangable? Also, others have used the CBR clip-ons with the FZ6 forks I as well believe. If you perform a search of the forums you'll find loads of info on this.
 
Yes. only that the triple is kind of weird afterwards with the mounts sticking out...
That is why I was inquiring about the triple. I would prefer to do the mod you're doing but in the same time do not want to invest over a $1000 right now and was looking for the easy way out :D

As you are changing the whole thing... can you superimpose the triples and see if they are symetricaly the same? I know the openings for the fork are not he same but that can be worked out if the rest is the same... please... :Flash::D:confused:

I measured the R6R forks between the center of the rhs and the center of the lhs, at the top with the triple clamp in place and found it to be 210mm apart. Can't get an exact measurement of the same area on the FZ6 with the bars 'n cables in the way, but it looks roughly the same. Verify b4 you proceed.

What I've decided is that for now I'm going to keep my FZ1 handle bars with the new forks. The engineer had some black risers lying around in his shop that he thinks will fit fairly easily. He wants to grind the underside of the bolt holes on the top triple flat and insert some support pieces machined to fit into that space. The risers will bolt on and sit flush with the top side of the triple clamp.

Just waiting for my tax return and some bits'n pieces - bolts, front fender - I've got on order. Will have some pics of the wip late next week, hopefully!
 
210 apart from middle to middle on the original... just mesured it... hmmm... :eek:

If you are talking about swapping a R6S top triple in so you don't have nubs sticking up with clipons, the width between forks is different. I also had that idea but unfortunately it is off by a few mm. I used 2003 R6 triple. You would have to switch the entire triple but as someone said, the stem is a different diameter.
