07-09 FZ6 brake calipers are the same as R6 calipers from 02-05...

R6 wheels from 02 - present fit all FZ6's.

Not completely true. I *think* 02 had a different mounting caliper for standard forks. Some 05 came with inverted forks and their calipers are incompatible. 02-03 R1 calipers, however, will fit and were used by one of the original modders (they come with golden orange caliper circles). I don't know about 02 wheels but 03-05 R6, 06+ R6S will fit. You might want to ask DefyInertia about that. I think he's done quite a bit of wheel research.

The wheels are the same part number for the R6R, R6S, and FZ6. There are differences in the axle / spacers.

Yep, just did a bit of digging around and this looks very encouraging for me :Flash: Thought I'd have to buy a new front wheel for a second there!

Golden orange caliper circles *drools*

A lot of the front ends I've seen on ebay include the break calipers, so I think I'll have to go for one of those.

Are 05+ R6 (and R6R) wheels really the same? I thought the rotor carriers changed some where in the last 4 years.

The rotors are different, and you'll need to buy those in addition to everything else. I got a nice used set for only $150.

I reckon that this might be a good guide as to interchangeablity of R6 Rotors and wheels.......YRT racing team in Australia race both current model R6's in the Australian Supersport Championship, and FZ6's in the FZ6 Cup....and i know from what they have told me, and the fact that my FZ6 Cup bike, has a wheel marked 08 R6 on the inside of the rim....and when i asked them about this, they said that they just used whatever rims were available for both bikes, as they were identical....

Um, forgive my super noobness, what are rotors, where do they go? Inside/around the axle?

Rotors are the metal discs that the brake caliper grip onto to stop.

Lol, oh dear, of course they are, all new terminology for me! Just always called them front discs lol I'm too used to old cars with drum breaks and refering to 'newer' cars that use disc breaks.

When you're looking for parts, keep in mind that both 06 and 07 R6R parts are the same. I hear that 08' has had a few changes, and the 05 was the first year with upside down forks, but they're not all the way up to par.

Got some more info today from the parts fellas at my local yamaha dealer.

I should be able to re-use the bottom bearing from my FZ6 in the top bearing of the R6 triple, they have the same yamaha part number (9339-99932)

So, slight problem with the bottom bearing though, may have go to a bearing manufacturer to see if they have the right size. The yoke of the FZ6 is slightly too big for the R6 triple, I think? I'll have to measure the width of the triple tree and the inner width of the yoke to get the measurements.

The bottom of the steering stem on the FZ is about .050" too small to press into the R6 lower triple. You need to machine off a little bit at the bottom, add a press fit bushing (which I would also weld on the bottom edge), and machine that down to the correct size.

Then there's just the spacer for the top triple to match the stem as long as you're going to run clip ons. Or you can buy a top triple for the R6 that has the handlebar provisions already on it (I saw one for sale around $550). Or you can have a whole new top triple made.

I plan on machining my own top triple. I have some FZ1 handlebar risers that I'll use.

Yeah, not sure if I will go clip-ons or not. I prefer the handlebars, but tbh, I've never ridden a bike with clip-ons, so I may give it a go. I think it'll be cheaper too.

What spacer at the top triple do you mean?

My goal for this week end will be to get some vernier calipers and a cheap, straight, triple clamp from a local wreckers. If they have a suitable clamp with risers I'll prolly take that.

The steering stem on the R6R is much larger diameter than the FZ, so if you use the modified FZ stem, the top triple won't press onto it. So you have to make a spacer to fill in that gap.

For the time and money this is going to cost it would be cheaper to trade in your FZ, buy an R6, buy adjustable clipons and lower mounted pegs.

Now that wouldn't be any fun would it???

Just visited some wreckers here in Brisbane, seems that it's gonna be harder than I thought to source R6 parts from these kinds of vendors. Both shops said they had never seen an R6 go through their businesses! Apparently the insurance companies here almost always rate written off bikes as "written off but repairable" and then sell them at auction. The wreckers never see them because peeps buy them and part them out. Also, if you buy one, you can fix it up and have it registered again by paying $300 to have the transport dept remove it from the write off list. No insurance company will insure these repaired bikes though, so beware if you do this.

The specialist motorcycle engineers shop here (yes only 1) doesn't open on Saturdays :( I'll visit him during the next week.

I think ebay or yamaha may be my only options for the top triple.

Top triple ordered, it will be in my hot sweaty hands tomorrow.

I spoke to the engineer who specialises in frame repairs and mods (Dave Kellett's his name). He doesn't see much of an issue with it and there is a bearings business two doors down from him :) The forks should be arriving in the next week, so as soon as that happens it'll be all systems go - hopefully! Prolly be late next week I'll be taking it all down to him and we will figure something out.

Will keep yas posted. Any news on ur installation MRGM?

Not as of yet, been too busy at work to play with it at home. I had been planning on having the bike apart for 1-2 weeks to complete the mod. Now if I took the bike apart, I wouldn't be able to ride for at least a month. I'll wait till the winter. There is also the other part that I'll need a Ohlins rear shock to go with the new front forks. I don't want the bike to be unstable with good suspension in the front, and crap in the rear.
