The way I see it, there are three---no, make that four---ways to fill up your FZ6 fuel tank. Myself, often, I don't even get out of (off) the driver's seat. Shall we see how this breaks down among FZ6-Forumers?

I stay on the seat and fill it up. is there anyother way.

I only get off my bike to grab a papertowel to cover the nozzle just before I put it in the tank to prevent spilling fuel on the paint. Then I sit on the bike and hold it level. Makes sense, this way it is truely full.

I put the bike on the centerstand and fill it while standing next to it. STUFF happens, why give it a chance. If the bike is being held up while filling, what do you do when the gas surges or spills? You get covered with gas, or you drop the bike with the gas cap open. Too many things to go wrong. Maybe I'm just a careful old guy, but I'd like to ready when STUFF happens if I can, GRUMPY
I put the bike on the centerstand and stand next to it. I never even considered sitting on the bike. I've got to get my wallet out, swipe my credit card, etc.
Strangely, most of the local stations are full service. I like to fill it up myself. I swipe, they set up the pump, I fill. What do other people do at full serve stations?

Place on sidestand, fill while off bike
Because: FZ6N's don't have a centre stand and I have to put my tank bag on my seat. I've only pulled up to a full service station once (there arn't many over here) and the lady looked at me a bit puzzled and handed me the pump

Never really thought of that +1 for you, I will forevermore put it on my centerstand. That's why I love this forum, something that wouldn't even cross your mind is mentioned and you have a moment of "duh, why didn't I think of that" and you change the way you do things.

They mentioned this in my MSF class. Seriously if there is a problem filling your tank while you are sitting on it where is that gas likely to go
1) on to your crotch
2) on to hot engine parts
Is it likely? Probably not but thats one of the last places I want to be burnt or covered in gas.
I don't put mine on the center stand because I'm too lazy to do it.

I would strongly suggest to never sit and fill as various people have indicated. I witnessed first hand, (albiet with an SUV) a fire started with static charges. Was not pretty, and was not my SUV. But to think what would happen if the fumes ignited while sitting almost over the tank with your face in the opening to see when it is full, well, just get off your bike and do it. Centre or side stand. Thanks, and ride and fill safe.

I'm with Grumpy, too many factors that could cause a fall while sitting on the seat while filling up. Murphy's law FTL.

I sit on the bike and I don't spill it. I wrap the opening with a rag to prevent overspray. Crotch is 100% safe! :thumbup: The gas card is in the inside jacket pocket and readily accessible so I don't have to dig for my wallet.
The biggest tip I can offer is DON'T put the gas into the tank at FULL squeeze of the handle. You're asking for trouble! First click if it has a lever-catch or a slow squeeze and slow fill-up. It's only about 4 gallons.... there's no hurry.

If I am by myself (I have only put gas in my bike once) I get off and put the bike on the stand. Otherwise, I park as close to my husband as I can and he fills his, then he tops mine off (i always tease him on his mileage 
)

I put it on the centerstand...mostly because I make a point to get off the bike and stretch, clean my visor with their dirty water cleaner (lol), perhaps get a drink, and check anything that bothered me while riding (luggage or tire pressure). It puts your head more on your shoulders not worrying about balancing while filling.

Good thing you didn't get gas at the station I was at in TX this past weekend, then. Some moron set the lock mechanism on the nozzle, so when I lifted the handle and then selected the fuel grade, as I turned toward the bike, gas immediately began gushing out of the nozzle. That would not have been pretty if I'd been sitting on the bike.
I always get off the bike and leave it on the sidestand (I don't care about squeezing those few extra ounces in with bike upright on center stand). I have to put my tankbag on the seat, anyway, to get to the filler. Gives me a chance to clean my visor, take a swig of water or Gatorade, and chat up the guy next to me who's intrigued by seeing a female rider.

I've never seen someone fill while still seated so it never occurred to me that this is possible. I get off every time. I don't bother to put the bike on the center stand. I already get 200 miles per tank and I'm never going so far away from civilization that I absolutely have to get that extra .3 gallons into the tank.

The thought of staying seated while filling up hadn't occured to me either, until a few weeks ago when I saw a rider doing this. I thought it was beyond strange, but apparently from the results of this poll it isn't too crazy.

When I'm in a rush, side stand, helmet off, stand next to the bike and pump gas.

OH!!! That sucks! That's an age-old trick the punks here use so I always check before selecting the grade to start the pump. Glad you brought this up! Pay attention folks!
I prefer helmet on in the event there's a major malfunction.
