They don't. Never. They rarely even look at you through their cool sunglasses and their ball cap on backwards. And why do the mostly ride GSXRs?

I've stopped giving them recognition, never get any in return, and heck I get waves from Harley riders all the time.

Maybe it's because I ride for the love of riding, not image (or it looks cool) and they know this.

You know, I have to say that i am still a squid for i only have 250 miles of experience upon a street bike, but from day one with my first street ride, i was waving to a couple sv650's that where coming down the road. One thing though, i have yet to have any cruiser wave back...

being new dosen;t mean that you are a squid, being a squid means that you care more about the image of riding than the safety. Flip flops, t-shirts, ball hats an helmets and sometimes shorts are all the safety gear a squid needs because they can outrun danger...

Being a squid is a mentality of invincibility that shows itself in the riding style.

oh, and they usually wave to me, but it isn't a normal wave, it is always something like a peace sign, or the shocker or something "Cooler" than a normal wave...

I had a squid do a little wheelie as he passed once after I waved. I think it was the squid version of a friendly wave haha.

Because they are using their one free hand to hold their backwards baseball hats on! :rof:

Some days I just kill myself...

a couple of guys i ride with always rev their engines at other bikes. and we travel to indiana alot and they always take off their helmets. kinda makes me feel silly when they rev their engines all the time

I was sat here thinking "What the bloody hell is a squid?" But someone has explained it. And yes, I hate the people who thinking riding a motorcycle down the road is like walking down a catwalk. My best mate said to me the other month "The only reason I would get a motorbike is to go fast and look good" my reply was "If I was an instructor and you said that, I'd refuse to teach you. Don't be an idiot all your life".

I understand what you mean by this, but how can ANY one think that someone riding a sport bike in shorts, t-shirt, and tennis shoes looks better than someone in a full textile/leather riding suit, boots, and a good looking helmet??

Sometimes I'm just tired of waving, or trying to figure out why someone didn't wave, ...was it the right wave from the right bike, was it the right wave at the right time...

Just today I had my 5 year old son in the back of my car...he gave a big thumbs up to a rider behind us, he got a big thumbs up back...made his day!

Around here, you don't get too many waves from the local Pepsi Cola racing team...I think they're too busy trying to look cool on their Busa's and Gixxers with hyper-extended swingarms. It's kinda hard for them to wave when trying to obtain a better 1/4 mile time between stoplights.

Have you ever walked in to a room full of your friends girlfriends wearing your full gear...I mean, helmet in hand, with jacket, gloves, leather pants and jacket, and quality boots like Sidis...

conversation stops and cat calls come (all in good fun of course). And then your lady gets to stand up and make it known that the badass who just walked in is hers...

Now do the same holding your helmet and walking in with a tshirt, shorts and flip flops/sneakers...you won't be noticed OR 1 might ask if you ride. "yea I do" "oh...cool" *goes back what they were doing.

The gear is cooler than any "image" you get with no helmet/gear IMO.

you passed the first class of not being a squid....

Another common "Excuse" for not wearing gear for Squids is that it is too hot for gear.... Personally i would rather sweat than bleed...

Same in the UK, I nod to everyone on two wheels (even scooter riders!) and without fail anyone in full gear nods back, and the squids in track suits and trainers don't even respond. Ignorant twunts.

I once had a brief convo with a pure squid at a bike meet who had a £500 Arai lid, but was wearing shorts and a vest on his (yep you guessed it) Gixxer. I asked him if he was worried about falling off, and his answer was "nah mate I carry a doner card so someone'll get the benefit". My answer was "Well make sure you only tick the corneas box because they'll be about the only parts of you left that won't need hosing off the tarmac."

Sniped from "Wiki"

Squid is a slang term used to describe an irresponsible motorcyclist. The term is common among motorcyclists in North America.

The term is generally used to describe a motorcyclist who rides aggressively, erratically or beyond their capabilities. Squids are perceived as overconfident and often ride without appropriate safety equipment, such as a helmet, gloves, leather jacket, riding pants, or boots.

The origin of the term squid is ambiguous. It is commonly said to be a contraction of squirrely and kid, or less commonly, squished and kid. It might also have something to do with the appearance of a lightly-clothed person who has fallen off their bike and slid chaotically down the road; the resultant injuries may make the unfortunate motorcyclist resemble an amorphous tentacled creature.

Squid is also described occasionally as an acronym, although these are likely backronyms.

"Stupidly Quick, Underdressed, Ignorant and Dangerous"
"Stupidly Quick, Underdressed and Imminently Dead"
"Super Quick Until I Die"
"Speeding Quickly Until I Die"

We have the Unfourtunate pleasure of having roughly 200,000 +- come to our neck of the woods every year for "Bike Week"

I just assume that they don't waive because their harley riding daddy's, who bought them their bikes, instructed them to be a jack*ss. It's either that or the fact that it's got to be pretty hard to do wheelies at 100mph going down the highway with one hand.
But God love 'em all. I consider both groups to be like the relatives you don't like to acknowledge at Christmas, but your mom has told you to be nice to. It's our duty to be respectful and perhaps one day they will will too.
