wont rev past 8k

Folks,

I'm a professional mechanic by trade and I get frustrated when people describe a problem and the "suggestions" are merely shots in the dark that don't exhibit any type of diagnostic process:

The bike won't rev above 8k - is it "bogging" or "missing"

bogging, i.e lack of power WITHOUT an ignition misfire is usually related to a fueling problem. Check for the simple things first, a kinked fuel line, a bunch of crap in the fuel tank, etc. A further diagnostic for this is to perform a fuel pressure test. The bike requires more fuel when under load than idle.

Missing, i.e. an ignition misfire, is when the bike starts dropping revs and it is clear that one or several cylinders is firing erratically. This can be caused by several things, arcing wires, low voltage to your ignition coils, bad plugs. Initially, check the wires to make sure they are seated and not arcing.

Always check the simple things first - make sure the air filter is clean, check to make sure your battery cables are tight and the charging system is in good health.

Can you provide some more info as to when the problem started happening and what conditions under which it happened.

On these bikes, verifying proper TPS operation is important, too.

First, the TPS needs to be checked with a multimeter to ensure proper operation at the closed and WOT positions.

Second, the fuel system needs to be checked - I highly reccomend a fuel pressure test.

besides that it seems to run good, but this being my first bike, im not to sure exactly how it should run

When the FZ6 hits 8K is when all hell starts to break loose. This where your motor will turn into a beast. Unless your tach is off but I'll bet this being your first bike your not getting to redline.

Test your TPS. You can do it right there with the diagnostics on the bike. Have to start some where and this is a place you can look right away that doesn't need any special tools or meter and could be related to this problem. It will tell you if you have full mechanical range on the throttle linkage as well as a working TPS. :D

do you know the ohms at closed and WOT for the TPS if so i'll check it tomorrow

whats a good pressure for the fuel?

thanks for the help

You can check your TPS now. Copied from a Forum link posted by Admin...

This shows how to check your TPS from diagnostic mode. The mode will read d01 You'll be able to rotate the throttle and see the readings They should be close to call outs and not have any gaps. The numbers should change very evenly as you slowly rotate your throttle...:D

This is done with out the motor running.

Throttle Position Sensor Issues (Are you Experiencing Poor Idle/Mileage, or Stalls?)

What are the Symptoms of a Faulty TPS?

Stalling
Irregual idle
RPM Drop while acclerating or trying to maintain a constand speed.
Drop in fuel Mileage
Poor Throttle Response

It'll appear dIAg on the display, you can release them now. Afterwards use select until you see a d01 (Diagnostic Mode for the TPS)

Then it should read between 15 and 17 if the throttle is closed,
With the throttle fully open, it should read between 97 and 100.

If the values are over or below those I mentioned, the TPS should be replaced.

To leave the dIAG mode, simply turn the key counter clockwise.

+1000 on what motogiro said, running the self diagnostic will give you a good idea of what's going on. Also you said that it will go all the way to red line when the clutch is pulled in, when it goes to red line does it seem to go very smoothly and take about the same amount of time to go from 8k- redline as it does from idle to 8k? Or when you hav the throttle twisted all the way back does rip up to redline fairly quickly?

the PO was a female new rider, she probably never took it to WOT i wonder if they did something to keep it from WOT on purpose?

That's what the restrictor does, and running the self diagnostics will tell you if your getting WOT. And on the female thing...that means nothing, the only person to pass me so far on Georgia's dragon so far was a chick on a pink gsxr750

Edit... Didn't see the part where you said NEW female rider

The throttle stop on my bike (non restricted) looks the same as yours..

If the bike does have restrictor plates, sounds to me that under load (in gear, clutch out) it'll limit RPM's to 8,000 as its designed to do.

With no load, even with the restrictor plates, it'll free rev to red line...

That's what I asked earlier with no load how does it it rev, does it go fairly smoothly to red line or does it go like a bat outta hell

On the European restricted bikes. The restriction is housed in the throttle stop.
As stated by Pete it's a US bike so should not be effected, unless retro fitted.
What year is the bike? TPS was really only an issue with 05-06 machines.
Defo check fuel lines, clean fuel filter. Check plugs and connections.

Good luck

If the basics check out, make sure the coils (spark plug wires) are all the way onto the spark plugs, just push on them.

You may also have a coil that is failing under load; eg: the higher the revs, the more throttle, more load, more difficult for the coil to produce a spark. If that is the case it will not rev out.

As you mentioned get some fresh fuel.
