why is my fuel guage going up to top then bottom

it does it constantly, up down up down ......new batt was fitted what do i need to do to resolve this please?.

Raise the gas tank and check the two connectors underneath. One is for the actual fuel pump, the other is for the fuel gauge.

Make sure there's no corrosion and gently pull on the wires (after checking them) to make sure the wire connector doesn't have a bad connection... I suspect one isn't fully snapped in...

If those appear ok, follow the wires away and make sure their not pinched anywhere under the tank.

If you still don't find anything wrong at this point, leave the tank up, turn on the ignition(DO NOT START THE BIKE), then jiggle the wires gently while watching the gauge. There may be a break inside the wire (not likely) however if there is, you may luck out and find it. The gauge will stay in one position if you find a specific spot that is bad...

When you say it goes up and down, what is the rate in time and how much does it vary. Empty to full? Does it go from up to down in one minute? Or 2 seconds?
 
if u did not drop any viagra in the tank, i bet $10 at the connections under the tank :)
 
i just bought the bike, the guy has just told me hursts in belfast fitted wrong battery, then fitted new one (right battery) and its had this fault ever since. it was going from empty to ful in like 1sec up n down now after 2 days ridin and fillin up tank it just flashes at last bar empty now all the time.
 
ok so i lifted tank and removed headlight and split speedo all cables seem to be fine so im taking it to hursts to get ecu reset.

Sounds like your clutch safety switch (by the clutch lever) is dirty. Squirt some WD40 in the vent hole, also where the switch goes in and out and work it a couple of times.

Its also possible the kickstand switch is gooed up. Even thou its up, if its dirty, it'll tell the ECU that its still down. Its easy to take apart and clean (one spring thats tame-won't shoot 12' on ya)..

ok will try that now mate thanks for prompt response.will report back.
 
sorted.....thank you so much....just did both stand and clutch switches but me thinks it was stand one as it was minging to the max.
