I'm very happy. With the exception of the GIVI bags and Motech rack, due to arrive this Thursday, my Fizzer is finished!
I spent the last few days wiring in my Valentine 1 radar detector. The detector itself sits on the master cylinder where it can get a good view. But the screen is impossible to see there, and of course I cannot hear the detector.
The solution? My sadly neglected remote audio and remote display units, which finally will see use.
The remote audio is hidden away behind the inner fairing panels. It's just a box that gives a headphone jack and a second volume control.
The remote display has to be seen, so I girded up my loins and started cutting my dashboard.
I think it worked OK.
But of course, it's not enough to have a display. Unless you plan on looking at it every three seconds, you need audio. I have custom molded earplugs with audio transducers in them, so all I needed was to plug into the headphone jack on the V1's remote audio box. Right?
But how am I going to listen to my MP3's then? And when I get a talking GPS, how will I hear that?
That's what the Mix-It does. A friend of mine designed and makes these. They will take four audio inputs and mix them together into a single output with a unified volume control. And the whole rig can clip to your belt or tankbag.
But I wanted a clean install, so I voided the warranty. A little desoldering and I had extracted the volume control, the power LED and the output jack.
I soldered them onto a daughterboard.
And then I cut up another fairing panel and got a tube of E6000 to glue the board in place.
Lastly I made a bracket to support the body of the Mix-It and put it all back together. And done!
My phone is also my MP3 player, so it'll be plugged into the Mix-it. I won't be able to take calls, but I'll know when I'm being called and can listen to voice messages while riding. I can also use the phone's GPS to navigate should I get lost. So the phone will be super velcro'd in place on the left fairing inner panel where I can fold out the screen and see it easily.
