Its reflexes were really quite amazing when it slipped on the ice and when someone tried to kick it over. But it had so much difficulties getting over the pile of bricks that it seems like it has a long ways before it could be put to any sort of practical use.

it seems like it has a long ways before it could be put to any sort of practical use.

They've already got a few uses for it. Search and rescue teams can use it to haul more equipment than they themselves can carry. And it's easy enough to put a stretcher on top.

It has the advantage of doing much less damage to the forest floor than a wheeled or tracked vehicle would. For forestry services, this is a big plus.

I hiked to the top of the Chisos mountains in Big Bend one time. At the peak is a bunch of radio equipment for the park. Somebody had to backpack all this gear up there, probably in several very difficult trips. One of these machines would make short work of that sort of task.

yes - and it looks like we're on the way. I read a while ago that the army had decided to stop deployment to Iraq of their (not quite) autonomous hunter-killer tracked robots. The best info available says the robot rotated the weapon even though it was NOT GIVEN A COMMAND TO DO SO. Hmmmm. Have we learned any lessons from Terminator? Or did we just learn the wrong lesson... Attachment shows an earlier version of the robot. I believe that's a .223 cal rifle shown, but it can accommodate up to a .50 cal - or a grenade launcher! Price is only about a quarter million per unit. What was that old saying about the difference between men and boys...
