I have 3 street bikes, a 2004 XL1200 Sportster Roadster, 2005 Yamaha Roadstar and the 2004 FZ6. The Roadstar gets the worst mileage of them all at between 36 to 40mpg. The FZ6 will go 50 to 54 if I am really careful. Over the last couple of weeks in fuel runs of 140 measured miles the 1200 Sporty has blown them all off averaging 56.3mpg at a run speed of 70mph. The fuel mileage has been calculated with the speedo error input to that calculation. Not bad for an old dog, not bad at all.....

I think Buell advertises their stuff at 55mpg. Kinda thought they were exagerating. Maybe not....

Its the tallest geared of the bunch. Not that much of a surprise. Now try that on a Fat Boy and see if it still compares.

Cruisers generally get good mileage, even big displacement ones... When you only rev to 3500rpm or so and cruise at 1500-2000 you aren't burning much fuel.

My Vulcan 900 gets almost 60mpg regardless of how heavy my right hand is, get probably low 40s on my FZ6... but I ride pretty hard on the fizzer.

you cant compare a harley and a jap bike come on, the harley's are way over priced and alot slower....... I rode a warrior and a road star with a few power adders for a few years made alot of harley guys mad....

Gee Charlie, a scooter will get 75+ mpg, and a mo-ped at 100+, but I wouldn't ride any of those either. I'd rather ride one of my bicycles than a "Hardly Ableson". :p

Now an XR converted to the old Cafe Race look I might consider it!

My Roadstar is a 1670 air cooled v-twin and the Harley Softail Deluxe, which is very similar is currently a 1573 or 96 cu in. In terms of fit and finish the Harley is far beyond the Roadstar and only 4K more. Take this back a few years to the 2005 which was a TC88 cu in and we used to bump them up to 95 cu in. When finished they would come off the roller at around 107 to 113hp and that Softail would eat a built 1670 Warrior for breakfast. Part of the reason for this is Yamaha simply doesn't have the performance backing in terms of parts to really get it done where Harley has a laundry list of stuff that is never ending.

The stock Warrior has 76hp and runs the quarter in 12.51 at 104mph. The stock 1200R Sporty has 64.7hp and runs the quarter in 13.02 at 100.3. My Sporty (1200R) has 77.8hp and is -1 on the counter. In total I am still 4K under what that Warrior costs and with the suspension set up I currently have wouldn't worry about the Warrior. I would however have to switch the counter to get the Warrior on the fat end.

So Pete, why does a bike that is 200 pounds lighter with half the cubic inches and better aero-dynamics not achieve the same or better fuel mileage data on an honest run. That's the question. Harley isn't the issue, fuel mileage is.

I have no idea what so ever. To tell you the truth I am disappointed in the FZ mileage. I was hoping for 55 or so. Cam profile, maybe???

My GS11 got 50 to 55 with four 34mm carbs and weighed about 525lbs.

That doesn't always pan out. I went -1 to 28/62 and the mileage went up as opposed to down. The reason for this is simply that the engine is now running at peak torque when it hits 70mph whereas before it was down 400rpm under the mark.

I had a VTX1800 that got 47 mpg many times. I havnt checked the Fizer yet but seems to be great. In 92 or 93 I bought a Honda Civic VX. On the window sticker it said 45/65 mpg. I did get in the 60's many times on trips. Here is a picture of the car...http://www.cleanmpg.com/photos/data/506/94_Civic_VX.jpg. Dont let anyone tell you that the only way they can get high mpg's is with hybrids. This car got as much as the hybrids and was just gas. They discontinued making the car. I wonder why??????????????

Exactly my point Sarge. It makes no sense. Even trying to get it up there by changing speeds on the run it gets to a point it falls off either faster or slower that the 70mph mark. You have a modified exhaust, has this not improved it on an honest fuel run?

The same held true with the Chevy Sprint which could slam 60mpg no problem but they were only around from 85 to 88.

Hard to say with the exhaust, I only had the stock one for about 5 days and the motor was brand new. I dunno??? I get 45ish commuting. On the highway it is better, but when I go on group rides I hit 100+ mph many times so it is hard to say. Once you are over 100 you are really pushing a whole lot of air.

I'm very curious to see what the mileage and power out put does with the PCIII and dyno tune. I supect the mileage will drop off. The place I'm going to used a variety of methods, dyno, O2 and some other method that I can't remember to tune, so it should help, my goal is mid-range, not top end. The FZ has plenty of top end.
