I've had my eye on a Street Triple for a while but am now seeing good deals on 2010 Speed Triples. Prices are lower than the Street due to the new version ST that is now hitting stores. Anyone ride one of these? Just sitting on one the ergos felt better to me than the Street but am concerned about having too much power in a short wheelbase.

As usual, I have my Triumph concerns about the electrical system. I know many say they are just as reliable as Yamaha but I see lots of regulator\rectifier posts on Speed and Street forums.

Hey Tim, your concerns regarding the R/R in the Triumphs is certainly understandable, but remember that the number of people who own a vehicle (car or bike) is far greater than the number of people who have these issues. You see a large population posting on the forums about it because they experienced a problem and began searching for help and found the forum to complain on. I've had my Street for 2 years without a single problem and just recently had the R/R checked with no issues.

Having said that, the newer models all come with upgraded/updated R/R's. If you are buying yours from the dealer, I'd request they put the new R/R on it before taking it.

You should also talk to Goop who just recently bought a left over 2010 Speed and see how he like it. I already know what he'll say, because it's an amazing bike, but chat with him anyway. The new Speed is a little smaller, a little lighter, same motor, and the new funky headlights (that a lot of people are converting to the old ones with). Great bike, great motor, great suspension, great brakes, and great fun.

Watch out for speed traps. It didn't get it's name for nothing!

If I had to sum up Speed Triple in one word: TORQUE

Loads of loads of it from the start. Makes amazing sound too. The demo bike I was on did not shift well, but I am being told it had to be that specific bike and in general Triumphs shift just fine.
There was more vibration at the handlebar than on FZ6, but the bar didn't have heavy bar ends, so I'm sure it's easily resolvable. Handling felt nice and sharp, seating position felt great.
I didn't spend enough time on it to make a really educated decision, but I do think it'd be very high, if not #1 on my list, if I was looking to try something other than my FZ6.

Hey Tim,

Indeed the short wheel base and the torque are taking a bit to get used to, coming from a FZ6. That said, this bike is a whole different ball game and is a blast! It's torquey, and the power delivery is smooth, which makes the sense of speed deceiving. I find myself speeding often and have to remind myself to be mindful.

I'm still learning the feel of the bike. I took a ride with Motogiro yesterday and it was the first time I really gave it hell (I'm at the point in the break-in where I can rev it decently). I'll just say, wow.

See if you can do a demo ride. I was able to with this one. I wanted to make sure it was what I was looking for. I wanted low end grunt and I got it! But I think you'll like it.

Also, the standard warranty is 2 years on Triumphs these days.

After reading through this thread earlier, I thought I'd head over to Triumph's website and do some more reading. I just noticed something...

They aren't making the Street Triple or Street Triple R anymore??? It's just the Speed Triple now? BTW, if someone could enlighten me to what the differences are/were in those two, I'd love to know. I've lusted over Paige's (of PJ's Parts) Street Triple R for the last year (the flat gray with gold trim...yum), and that sucks that they aren't making it anymore.

BTW, badass looking Speed Triple, Goop! Love the flat black!

They do make the Street Triple still, but are updating it for 2012 with the new style headlights (which I don't like).

I have the Street Triple R in the matte graphite like you described. I've never been so happy in my entire life with how a bike looks AND how it rides in every possible capacity. It's just sick!

If I were buying a bike today, it would be this exact bike. :)

Probably the only bike that I would have a really tough time choosing the fz6 over, though I haven't done more than squat on one. Love the look; love it.

Trade straight up? ;)

Bryan,
I was talking to a guy last week that said there was this stuff he used on flat black that was awesome but that he could only find it at a Harley dealer...

We'll have to go in our HD disguises......Hey who's the guy in the middle?

Had the day off so I drove to a Triumph dealer outside of DC who would let me demo a Street Triple, the one I was most interested in. Well, it started raining just as I got there and they would not allow demos on wet roads. As it was a light rain I tried to wait it out but the Gods would not allow it.

They had sold the 2010 Speed anyway. I sat on the new Speed and STR for some time anyway. I figured the main thing I liked better about the Speed was just the seat; it did not crunch the crotch as much.

I think the real deal breaker is the Street's super wide turning radius. I have to negotiate a very tight right then left turn into my back yard shed. Even with the FZ6 at full lock things are tight. I played with the FZ6 taking it in and out of the shed trying to keep it at less than full lock and there is no way I can get it to work, the area is just too tight. I kept hitting the railing to the steps or the heat pump.

Oh well, one dealer said they had sold all their STRs for the Summer and the place I was at today only had one left and they were surprised that was still there. Guess I'll keep the FZ a bit longer.
