Salary Question for New Job, Please Advise

Working full time isn't a problem during school, I've been doing it for like 5 years. I think I have a pretty good idea with all the comments I've recieved from the forum and others in how I will handle this. I will let you all know. Thanks guys for all the input. It's very appreciated.

Hope you can get 55k with some benefits. Thats a great starting salary.

I would offer two suggestions:

1. You should be able to do some research to determine the range that comparable positions in your area pay.

2. Make sure you're talking to the right person, preferably the decision maker. You don't want things getting lost in transation (both directions).

You may have gotten the wrong message here, he won't get fired, well I hope not as he's part time. But there will be point where he will price himself out of a possible full time position, and he could jeopordize losing this position by having a different person fill this position that he was asked to fullfill.

And yes, just about everyone is replaceable unless you work for yourself. I'm not sure what you do for a living or if you work for a company, but I'm sure most companies will continue to operate with or without you. Yes, they may experience some bumps along the way, but it's not like any company will stop dead in their tracks just because of you.

You also have to consider the current economic times we live in where unemployment rate is high, over qualified people or professionals are competing for jobs at very low wages or salary.

I'm not even sure where Desoto Missouri is, but I'm sure it's not San Francisco or NYC, where $55,000 isn't really considered great. But might be a great salary someplace else.

I think there has been some great suggestions as well as some bad ones. I just hope that the OP just uses good judgement. Obviously, during research such as what is the average income for the area you live in versus the national average, what this particualr proffession normally pays are figures that will be very helpful to come up with a fair number.

Like I said, for entertainment purposes only, I have set the over under at $42,500. I believe based on his geographical location, his age, etc, I don't think his salary would exceed this figure.

Desoto is a pretty small town. It's about 50 miles south of major city of St Louis. My goal is to make 40k or more but I will settle for less either way. I didnt make over 14k last year...I've been talking directly to the owner. Next Tuesday is the day we will meet. It was postpones due to some business. Nobody is really competing with what I'm doing because the position was never available. I kind of had to prove myself for what I've been doing and the managers and the owner are currently pleased. This will be interestinG however this turns out.

I did, but its nothing special, I took it because it had health benefits and pays a little more than what I got. Right now I make about 25k, nothing exciting, but it will work for now, atleast my fz6 is payed off. I will keep looking for a second design job to do on the side. Also I may post some artwork to sell on here if Admin doesn't mind it. It was kind of a let down so I never brought it backup because I felt like crud for awhile. At least the job experience will help me.

Thanks for letting us know. Remember that every job is simply more experience towards the next one. Don't feel bad about securing a FT job, that you can do in concert with your education..... it would have been cool to make bank on it; but it's a big step to make in one shot. The next gig, where you can demonstrate that you have the ability to excel at many things simultaneously is a H-U-G-E plus.

Do NOT feel bad about that salary, times are tough, and Boses always hire students to save money.

What's important is that You have an opportunity to ROCK this job and build a beautiful resume bullet. You will also gain that experience that others will not have when the interview comes for that career job.

It sounds like you are a real go getter if you've been doing school and work full time, keep working hard and you will rise to the top.

My first year in the NAVY (96') i only made 12K, and that was working WAY more than 40 hours a week We all have to pay our dues.

like the others said, take the experience and learn all you can,
build that resume and someone will reward you for it, unfortunately
you sometimes have to leave to get what you are worth, don't know
why so many business owners/managers are so short sighted

Well you fell into a catagory a lot of students get put into, companies hire students knowing they have little to no experience and nothing to base their salary on.

I think you said you work 20hrs a month? or 20hrs a week? Im going to assume 20hrs a week because at 20hrs a month leaves you at one 5hr shift a week which isn't justifiable employment.

Assuming 20hr/week that puts you around $7.5/hr which is normal for your area and entry level job. I know you wanted to shoot hi at $45k but realistically, as you now know, jobs just dont work like that especially since they are moving you to something they want not something you're specifically qualified for.

Full time at 25k a year is decent for what you do, considering its a small town/area I would be happy with that much because there are a lot of ppl doing more for less in this economy.

being a recent graduate I can tell you that the "Im finally out of college im going to land a great job as my first real job" is just a fantasy now and realistically most people do not reach what they want to until several years later.

Right now the greatest benefit you get is the health and potentially insurance benefits which are usually much greater in fulltime positions.

Grats on the positon though! I was just leered to read this thread bc it said you made $30hr for a 5hr shift once a week which is impossible.:BLAA:
