R6 big bore kit...can it work on an FZ6?

The PCV is there to prevent the cases from reaching a pressure higher than atmospheric. It doesn't have much to do with the airflow in the bottom end, more to give the 'blow by' from the cylinders somewhere to go.

That's why the EGR puts the case air back into the air box, so the oily air and combustion byproducts don't get into the atmosphere without being consumed in the engine.

wolfman look up windage tray in google

it is not the air that is the issue it is the oil vapour/mist that will cause resitance to the crank

a windage tray allows the oil vapour to form back to oil droplets and fall to the sump
look at the bmw s1000rr valve vids to see this mist

after a windage tray u can add a vaccum pump and seal the engine too :)

about 10hp has been found on some v8's with just a vaccum pump addition!

Wow! This thread has really taken off. I'm glad to hear the project is picking up steam again Jamie.

I am pretty sure it was Porsche who first used Nicasil in mass production. The Mahle cylinders on the 911 in about '78ish or so began to use them.

Could be, Pete..... I can't imagine BMW piloting a program purely on a motorcycle production line.... autos would have to have been the development vehicle. Too much money for a bike company to deal with alone. Porsche, BMW, VW have all cross pollinated a number of times over the decades.

My Dad was never a fan of pancake motors, due to gravity always pulling the pistons 'down'..... ensuring that the bore would eventually come out of round. As he had started his career in the USAF as a B-29 engine mechanic, I tended to believe his observations as I grew up around him. He wouldn't take a car to a mechanic, until after all of the kids moved out of the house. A true shade tree mechanic. (Hated the Chevy Vega motor, and the Datsun 1600cc motor..... funny, I remember thrashing both of those.....:D )

Yeah, the project sorta gotta away from me last winter, was busy spending money on the shop, and dealing with a 1 year old child a lot! then Summer came, and i just wanted to ride the thing!

Now the weather is getting colder again, and the shop taking less of my finances, it's time to do it!

And yes, now this thread is going where i wanted it too...into a discussion on all the different ways of going about such mods, and what they do...

You cant imagine how many hours i have spent searching for part numbers, parts, suppliers, logistical stuff, etc, etc...

Best part is now, the guy who is doing it, really has his eyes on the ball...is well focussed on the job now, and is getting that evil "mad scientist" look in his eye when he talks about it....i like that! :D

Oh I can imagine the time you've spent researching. Since I bought the FZ1 I've burned the midnight oil researching mods. Interestingly I'm pretty much following the exact same path as the FZ6. Akra exhaust, PCIII, ConvertiBars, Corbin, Ohlins (90% sure, could be an Elka), Puig, etc. For this bike I've got a set of Rizoma rearsets, they go on tonight!

Please keep this thread going, I'm really looking forward to reading about it.

Are you looking at getting one of those fuel cut-off eliminators that Mikey keeps blabbing onto me about...apparently it's a pretty handy mod on the FZ1???

Cant wait to see the Akra exhaust on the FZ1! If it's half as god as the full titanium/Carbon system on my mates Z1000, THEN IT WILL BE AWESOME!

....am researching, with a bit of help from one of our Aussie forum members, the possibility of getting Akra Titanium headers custom made by Akropovic right now...to match up to a Akra set of titanium slip-ons for an FZ6...OMFG...it aint gonna be cheap if i push the go button, but the results could be spectacular in terms of more weight lost, performance boost, sound, and those sexy Akropovic looks & workmanship!

Most of all, i think it would do the engine mods justice in terms of extracting as much hp as possible....

a PC5 would be nice too!

All this modding out bikes dont help a fella thats already got the "itch" for modding himself.

Although i am curious to know it parts off older fz6 will fit newer models as well. Cuz id like to get a set of rizoma rear sets or gilles tooling. It says from 2004> but will those work on an 07 model? Pricey yes but id like to get a set someday.

You can generally follow what the aftermarket maker says or look up stuff in my Compatibility Chart (see my banner below).

I'll take it the pegs are referring to the rear sets themselves or the actual pegs?

Some manufacturers put aftermarket pieces up that say 2004 and up. Just how far up is up i wonder? Gilles tooling makes some for 07-09 and the part number were different compared to the 04-06. Was there any changes to the position of the rear sets between those years? Cuz they look relatively the same to me, but I've only seen pictures so I dont have any solid numbers per say.

I'm the resident geek in my house who looks up everything for my and my dads bike (FZ6 and FZ1 respectively). I've spent hours looking up everything from bolts to full engine transfers. I love where you are going with this wolfman, it will be one sick bike. I may have to fly down just to drool near your bike. Can't drool on, it leaves stains.

Unfortunately I be poor,so the motor boring is out of the question and I will be going the FZ8 route if it comes to Canada, I really want to see what I can do to one of those. Infact I was hoping the 110 rwhp plateau is possible. The dads FZ1 is a beast, and he is about to pull the trigger on a few new parts, and I love helping him decide. Soon the girl will be on her FZ6R, and I will have even more to do!

And yes, my family is a Yamaha family.

With the big bore kit in place and a possible Akro custom header will there be a "true" y pipe for the under tail?

I've thought about taking off Scorpions so called y pipe and fabing up my own y pipe with almost equal tubing. I dont suspect any power gains from it but I'm almost sure the exhaust note will be better, plus im not to big on watching my bike warm up in the cold and all the exhaust coming out of the left muffler and hardly any from the right. :spank:

Anybody made their own y pipe or modified the aftermarket one so there can be equal flow between both mufflers?

I dunno whether the Akro system comes with a "true" Y-Pipe, but i have a feeling the Leo Vince pipes for an FZ6 have a more centred "Y-pipe" than most???

If you were to put a butterfly valve in the pipe that has the best flow, you could close that valve just enough to 'balance' the flow. Very simple in design and execution.... you need a very small hole top and bottom in the 'y' on the straighter path, that you can mount a shaft through. fix a round plate to the shaft inside the Y pipe, and mount a lever outside.

Start it up, and start closing the butterfly, until you see the sort of flow out of the 'low' side as you want. Fix the valve in that position, and you're all done.

Its quite a toss up between Akro and Leo Vince, ive seen photos of both exhausts and they look similiar but have their differences too. Im just not sure if they both did like scorpion and drilled a small hole in the main pipe and then welded the second pipe to the hole. Akro and Leos pipes are more of a y design more so than scorpion.

I havent thought of the butterfly design, sounds like a winner too. I may try to design and fab up my own "y" pipe soon as learn how to weld.

No offence to those with Leo Vince pipes....as they are very nice, but if i had a choice between Akropovic & Leo Vince.....the decision would be easy...Akro all the way, the workmanship on Akro stuff is something to behold!
