Sorry blue team, I'm jumping ship and switching to black this weekend. I have a couple scratches from a pothole incident last season and my friend is having his car painted so I'm taking the opportunity to throw my bike parts into the mix. He's using a jet black with some sort of really high quality clear coat, I've seen the painter's work before and it's show quality. I'm going to strip it down and do the prep on Saturday, any pointers for a first timer? I was just planning on very fine sanding/tack cloth. Any secret hang ups on removing any blue parts or anything like that? Thanks, I'll show before and after next week.
 
Sweet deal! Are you gonna have to even pay for it at all?

Nice choice though, covering up that embarrassing blue :D I guess if it can't be red, it might as well be black!:thumbup:

I think orange would be pretty cool actually, but I'm going for an all flat black look to try and match the 07 powdercoat.

So Saturday I stripped all the parts off in about 30 minutes and drained the gas tank. This was handy since I used gasoline to remove the badges and stickers which worked well. Next I cleaned all the parts with reducer (don't do this on bare plastic, only painted surfaces!) to remove wax and other misc. crap on the surface. Use a clean rag to wipe it down. Next I used red scotch brite pads to scuff everything to a whitish color, that's just clear coat coming up. When you're done nothing should be shiny. This is annoying and time consuming, it tears up fingers which then get dipped in reducer, which stings. All whining aside it wasn't too bad. The painter sanded the right eyebrow that had the scrapes and it came out smooth without any filler needed. I left at around midnight with everything "prepped" for paint the next day.

On Sunday they called me and said they had all the chemicals and the flat black paint ready, and that they went over all of my work again. I guess it wasn't quite up to his standards... it's really hard to get all the crevices and I'm a total amatuer. My buddy called at around 11 last night to say all the paint and clear was on and it looks amazing, and now he wants the same for his R6. I'll have to take his word for it since I haven't seen it yet. Here are a couple pics of the pieces ready for spraying, for some reason my computer won't grab the other pics from my phone right now but I'll get them. I plan to let everything cure for a few days before reinstalling so I don't scratch it all up, but it should be all done by the weekend.

It was going to be really cheap but the car is actually being done separately now, and I'm using a flat black instead of the jet black going on the Audi. The painter did it on his own time and only charging me around $200. He said if it were a job going through the shop and I hadn't done most of the prep work it would have cost around $1200 so it's still a great deal. I hope to have it back together in a few days, luckily it's cold and raining right now!
 
My iPhone has gone stupid and I had to email these to myself. Here is the bike stripped down, it looked really mean! Now I'm thinking about a conversion. Also the parts after my prep work, looking white and dusty.
 
congrats on coming to the dark side :thumbup:... i think if i ever repaint my bike ill do like a gunmetal color. I love my black, but i like having a color nobody else has

Gun metal would be nice! Has anyone here painted their bike flat black or am I going to be the first? If there is someone else do you guys have any pics because I'm dying to see it all put together!!
 
Someone did a flat black, but frankly, it wasn't really professionally done and the bike looked more like it had been through a fire than anything else. I can't remember who it was, though.

With yours being professionally done, I'd say it's going to look amazing! I've always thought that would be a great color on a bike. :thumbup:

Flat black can look REALLY good and mean if done right... it can also look really bad if done half-assed...

Looks like your guys know what they're doing so you should be good! Can't wait to see the pics.

I think his paint job is horrible, but why post that? I think it's pretty obvious without having to write it... you will notice that my post talked about the tail only, and how his bike looks "dirty & aggressive"... which I think is true :)

Personally if I did something that looked like crap, I would want people's honest opinions and to tell me it looked stupid or bad. Just becasue you are honest, dosen't make you mean (truth hurts sometimes). But I see what you mean.
 
Well I got the call after work to look at the parts. They look amazing! Very professional job, perfect finish, looks great. He used well over $200 in paint/clear/chemicals, and the clear came out perfectly. It isn't shiny, but it catches the light at every bend in the metal, the tank especially. So after looking at them... I paid him and ran them straight to the garage and reinstalled them immediately. In retrospect I should have maybe labelled the hardware, or taken pictures, but I didn't. It took over an hour to figure everything out, and I had tons of bolts left over.... just kidding, only four, and they're for the turn signals that wont be going back on. It's all back together now and it looks nasty. When I had the tank on but not the fairing it looked a little like a speed triple, eventually I'll have to do a conversion. Here are a couple pics, but the lighting in the garage is "christmas" so they look terrible and do it no justice. As soon as the sun is out I'll wash it and take some real ones. No rattle can look here, very happy with the final product.

DOPE!!!!!!!....If I were you, I'd do that 6000k HID projector headlight retro-fit pronto...It would look ultra-kickass on a shadow fizzer like yours
