Obscured License Numbers: why?

I've noticed on most, if not all, photos and videos on this site that the license number has been either physically or electronically "blanked out" so no one can read it.
For someone who just took the Tail of the Dragon at 120 mph, or jumped a police cruiser making him drop his doughnut, I can understand. But for showing off a mod or something, what's the reasoning? I'm thinking any nefarious activity that could be done with someone else's license number, could just as easily be done to some bike owner who passes you on the Interstate, or parked at the local Wally-World.
So, why?

I've wondered the same thing. I think it's a bit silly.

Here in the UK the bad people can use your number plate on a similar vehicle. So any speed cameras they get trapped at then you get the hassle. They also steal vehicles and put your plate on them so they do not look stolen. It just reduces the opportunity.

Well i noticed everyone does it so i followed...haha. Maybe its in case of illegal mods? Or people get the plate number, buy your info online (with like "peoplesearch" or sumthin) thanks to the license plate # and find where you live? Come steal your bike? In case undercover police go to the forums and someone shows off about stunting and speeding they can go to the spot and stop him, use his posts as evidence? i dunno...lol

+1 I too have always wondered, my mate just changed his with liquid paper mad a e look like a f, rode with it for years, speeding the whole time, and i mean the whole time (his hobby was a run here called the delamere, where he use to always try and hit 300km/h) untill one day a cop checked his plate while following him down the expressway and it came up a harley not in fact a yzf1000 thunder ace, they then proceeded to block off the expressway and nab him. After 3 adjurnments on his behalf he finally went to court, and because it had taken sooooo long and he denied changing it, it only cost him $160, and nearly a stuffed bike when they tried to run him off the road.

Real answer: Reduces the risk of a forgery. I figure way fewer people looking to forge a plate see mine in person riding down the road than could potentially see it if I put on the internet, especially on a motorcycle forum.

Another thing, if you have a licence #, there are states in the U.S. where (for a fee) you can get information on the owner of that licence place. By blanking it out, you're helping to reduce the chance of identity theft, or someone seeing your bike on here, getting your address, and then showing up and stealing your bike.

Well like i said above if you go online to the right web-site with a plate number or a name you pay like $25-$50 and you'll get a personal report on an individual with info like: All addresses known for the past 5 years, all phone numbers, if they have ever commited a crime etc etc. Its like a background check...

I`ve been told I should be careful with posting my plates on forums... and I have seen people get trashed big time across the whole internet because they were being idiots, and left some personal info behind them, which eventually was used against them... but I am too lazy to do it

I think that the whole world is getting too scared of everything... a few isolated stupid/horrible examples done by a very small minority of ppl drive the rest of us 99.9% of the population to do all kinds of stupid things... George Carlin (we will miss you!) had an awesome sketch on that topic... how all of us are getting manipulated by the media and the global fear of everything...

I have insurance...If anyone in my state wants to track down my bike they will just simply follow me home...

I just do it (when I remember) because I don't need my students knowing who my onlin personality is. When you work with adolescents you take extra precautions. Like my myspace page being set to private and I'm very careful that I have no pics of me totally trashed on it.

I have a friend that worked at the sheriffs office and he would run a license for me just for fun.

I have noticed that everyone including TV does it (obscure LP's) nowadays.
