This hit the news last week.
3-wheelers are gone
now minis are gone
yeah, sportbikes on the street will probably be gone some day
I say mandate safety equipment and education, don't mandate behavior and take away the freedom to participate in an activity b/c the gov't thinks it's too risky for you.

Is this the same deal as the excessive lead in 100cc bikes, and children
use them the most, so they are banning that?
What a goofy deal.....who chews on their motorcycle?
Looks like there is plenty to do in the government, without wasting time
on stupid stuff! (probably cost taxpayer $100,000 just to pass the legislation)

Hi,
the míni motorcycles are forbidden to ride on official streets here in germany, too.
ATV is allowed with driver license since some years.

The new Obama Law outlaws mini's and atv's, you can't ride one anywhere or buy one.

That's a little different than an outright ban. I've got 100 acres of private property to ride around in. If I want to buy a mini-bike for my kids and let them ride around the farm, I should damn well be able to.
I'm drafting a letter to my congressmen now.

Well one good thing this might fix, is the Pocket Rockets that can be bought at Pep Boys, and then the inner city folks riding them around the streets and sidewalks with no need for a liscense...its pertty rediculous around here. I can understand the rural folks that have the opportunity to raise thier kids on birt bikes...unfortunatally My kids will have to wait until they are old enough to take a MSF course and ride with daddy for a while. Not that this law will effect the ghetto they don't need to follow any laws anyway...but if they can't buy them easliy...thats a start.

I think it all stems from the toy recalls from last year. Government has a tendancy to go overboard & they have put everything containing lead under one umbrella! Apparently there are parts which contain traces of lead....so starts the "panic" Geez!

AMA calls for all motorcyclists to help stop the ban of youth OHVs
PICKERINGTON, Ohio -- The sport of off-highway recreation is seriously threatened by recent legislation that imposes strict lead content guidelines on children's everyday toys. The Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA) has effectively banned the sale of youth off-highway vehicles (OHVs). The American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) is calling for action now to help reverse the potentially devestating effect this could have on the sport of OHV recreation.
"The unavailability of youth OHVs will devastate family OHV recreation and cripple amateur competition, creating a domino effect across all aspects of motorized recreation," said AMA Vice President for Government Relations Ed Moreland. "All motorcyclists, whether they recreate off-road or not, need to come to the defense of our youngest riders and help ensure the future availability of youth OHVs."
A quick and effective way to help is to write or call your representative and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and let them know petitions exist to exclude certain vehicles from the final rule governing the law. You can send your representative a letter by using the Take Action button in the Issues and Legislation section of www.AmericanMotorcyclist.com. To contact the CPSC directly, use the contact form here.
According to section 101(a) of the enacted legislation, all youth products containing lead must have less than 600 parts per million (ppm) by weight. The CPSC has interpreted the law to apply to various components of youth OHVs including the engine, brakes, suspension, battery and other mechanical parts. Even though the lead levels in these parts are small, they are still above the minimum threshold.
In order to assure continued availability and access to youth OHVs, the Motorcycle Industry Council (MIC) and Specialty Vehicle Industry Association (SVIA) submitted petitions to the CPSC asking that certain vehicles be excluded from the final rule governing the law.
"It is critical that Congress and the CPSC know that these petitions exist and that by acting on them they will maintain a vital form of recreation for American families, preserve youth racing and protect the thousands of jobs associated with this industry," Moreland added. "We are asking all motorcyclists to write or call their representatives and the CPSC today and ask them to approve the petition to exclude youth OHVs from the CPSIA lead content requirements."

Stop looking at my title!
It is just a classification problem that these devices fell under toys. I don't believe anyone set out to deliberately ban these devices it was just an oversite.

OK... I thought at the beginning of this thread this was a knock on the motorcycling industry...
This is an example of what happens when we as consumers allow industry to run w/o self-regulation... I can't stand it when we as consumers have to pay for broadband overregulation, because some ass with no moral compass allows unsafe toys, food, PEANUTS to be mass produced and sold with the willingness to settle because its profit worthy....
The alcohol & Spirits companies self-regulated years ago and are enjoying the benefits of very lax advertising laws for their products... Tobacco not so smart...
I would love to get campaigns together for safer riding regulations including a call for more riders to become legal and licensed and to get rid of those little loud annoying minibikes on city roads...
Sorry for the rant!!! Im the guy that likes to target shoot and still treats 11 year old gun shot victims... Just frustrating...

Must just be us NYer's that let the Pocket Bikes run around our cities...But glad we agree.
I wish NY would put more effort on these kinds of problems not being the first state behind Cali when a new Gun law comes to the front...
NY the unfree state, you can do whatever you want as long as you keep it in the inner city areas...if your outside any major city limit, better mind your P&Qs...

my fact's are right, and the fact is Obama is president Not Bush . You Bush haters are going to keep blaming Bush for everything from the war of 1812 to the end of time and will always give obama a free pass and not blame him for anything. I think I'll go for a ride while I still have the freedom to do so, before it becomes illegal.
