so It looks like I have my list whittled down to these two, similar bikes
aimed at similar market segment, main difference is the parallel twin
in the 650R, have to admit I like the looks of that linear torgue curve,
consistent power delivery from 3K up to around 8K would make for some
pretty satisfying riding around town and in hilly areas would minimize the
shifter rowing, I know in a foot race the FZ6 would leave it standing, but
I'd like to think I've outgrown that need (maybe not tho) anyone here
own one or have ridden one (a 650R) that can offer any comparison to
the FZ6?

and all the added plastic on the ninja really holds no value to me
except maybe a bit more rain protection, other than that I really like
the looks of the FZ6 far batter

guess I better make up my mind shortly or they'll be nothing but used
FZ6's to chose from, I hate the idea that they killed a bike like that :(

There's numerous comparos between the two on the forum. You'll probably find them with the search function. IIRC, main comments are that Yamaha build quality is better and the I4 is smoother.

searching the terms ninja 650r vs FZ6 returned one useful result: this thread...
anyone ridden the 650R that can add a comment with some value to it?

Here's what i found with a little digging. Personally I like the looks of the back half the 650r but thats where it ends. Good luck on your decision.

Kwaka ER6N: 62.94hp @ 8800rpm
Kwaka Ninja 650r: 64.8hp @ 9000rpm
Suzuki Gladius: 67.12hp @ 9000rpm
Suzuki SV650: 71.6hp @ 8750rpm
Aprillia Shiver: 76hp @ 9300rpm
Honda 599: 82.9hp @ 11,750rpm
Yamaha FZ6: 90.4HP @ 12000rpm
Triumph Street Triple: 91.1hp @ 12,100rpm

FZ6 all the way. My roommate has 650R, it’s nice and all but if you compare the two, FZ6 is on the top for sure. Smoother engine, faster acceleration and over all better bike.

thanks guys, and Imust have poor search skills ;)

was 90% of the way to having just the FZ6 left on my list, then started
to think and read about that 650R, I'm back to the FZ6 now.....

entirely too much time to think about this is a problem, I'm working
a civvie contract in Afghanistan with no access obviously to bikes, so
reading on the net has been my only source of info, I'm home next month
and want to make the deal shortly after arriving, in the fall when prices
should be a little lower, gonna ride the Yamaha and if I likes it, it'll be coming
home, and I think I'm gonna like it

I just so happens that I have one of each. My wife rides the ninja and I ride the FZ6. We got the ninja for its seat height and my wife liked how it looked(pretty blue). I think they are both good bikes. They both have pros and cons.

The ninja has a more comfortable seat but luggage options and tie downs are limited. I have a cool trick to fix the luggage issue if you end up buying one. The plastics can vibrate. As you stated, the tourqe curve is flat.

I like the power curve on the FZ6. Although the bike is a little buzzy it feels more solid and manly. The ninja seems a little toyish compared to the FZ6. The FZ6 seat is not very comfortable on long trips.
