mounting a skid plate

Possible, well yes. If you are riding your FZ in such a manner/location where you think this is a prudent idea, I think you may need to invest in a KLR or V-Strom.

If you can mount a belly pan........ you can mount an armor plated belly pan.....

I bashed it into a couple ruts and thought, "hmm....I guess that's where skid-plates come in handy....
@ twitch: going camping in the mountains this weekend or the next. plan on off-roading to find something suitable. there will be a lot of pushing the bike involved for sure. pictures will come of the fz in ridiculous locations.

@ ridgeback: Ill be the fastest man in the dakar....until I plow into a dune head first and bury myself all the way to my ankles....

@ sabre: I cant afford one, I reeeeeally wanted one this summer but about $2k spent on mods and mechanical upgrades and maintenance, and another $2k coming up on gear and this trip, the money I had available for a $4,000 KLR is now gone. Next season.

that would be too tough to find i think. this might not be something i will be able to do.

Quite easy, I believe: A couple plates of 1 cm steel, weld them together in a sort of triangular shape, drill a few holes, and voilá. Your very own armor plated belly pan.
Your bike might sag a bit, but that's just a nice attribute to this fine mod:thumbup:

I think you should at least mock up a template made of wood or cardboard in the shape and location you want. Like RJ said, if a bellypan can fit on there, why not? You rotated the thing farther forward and upward so that it covers the headers. Maybe just use a shield-shaped piece of aluminum diamond plate, or even two symetrical pieces...:don'tknow: There HAS to be a way. Maybe one of those hardcore super-modders over at the streetfighter forum has something similar to compare to?
Do you currently have a belly pan? If so, why not removed the plastic while leaving the mounting brackets as a guide in making a cardboard template of a skidplate. It's a start and if everything goes well maybe you can go into mass production. What tyres are you using for off roading?

I was thinking the same thing!
I haven't seen anything on the boards for this lone, but I'm sure you could come up with something, if you're into adventure-riding. That would be a cool addition to the site. I've been having idle (vs. your active) thoughts on the same.
Yeah I have wanted to get into adventure riding so badly....but don't have the deep pockets for it. So, where ride comfort and speed of travel would have been the order of the day....grit, determination, and just pushing the bike through muck might have to do.
This weekend or the next I will be getting out to the mountains for a "feeler". The next time after that if I can afford and am able to bolt something on in a couple places to protect the chain and belly area I will get more adventurous.
A bike to me is something that removes restraints. I hate being tied to the asphalt, but at the same time hate not being able to corner properly and gas it out of those corners.
@ tire question: The tires are 100% road tires. Getting through rougher stuff will involve a lot of me shaking my head thinking "wtf am I doing here?" And there is no hope of getting through stuff thats actually quite rough unless I can manage it at low speed and not just be sitting there spinning the tire endlessly and actually have to lug the bike like a mule with it chained to my back.
It's worth a shot. Worst thing that happens is I find a great spot to take a break and rest for a bit.

You just nailed it for me too...we got this thing because it can do everything, yes? Work on road-skills, commute, and yet take the great adventure which may lead to roads less-traveled?
Yeah, we have a better bike for off-roading than an actual R6, and a guy took an R1 around the world with road get-up. He took it through muck and rivers. I'll be damned if I accept anything less!

Bikes in India go everywhere, but they are more suitable to off-roading. The FZ6 will do a good enough job if you are really determined and are smart about it (i.e. go slow and pick your paths well).

hopefull you don't put a hole in you engine with all this off road riding.
Make sure you bring instant JB weld and make sure you keep an eye on the oil cooler, filter, radiator, and the entire engine (especially the bottom)....a rock kicked up hard enough will bust a hole. Bottoming out will easily bust a hole.
You're better being patient and just getting a $2,500 USD Japanese dual sport.
Oh by the way, DUAL SPORTS can really rail on the pavement on dual sport or better tires so you won't be giving much up in the high speed corners and you'll be much faster in the super tight stuff. My DR650 was super fast...I was probably riding too fast for the street.
