Motocyclist Killed Outside My Old House

So my Ex calls me today and says, "Hey we had so excitement at the house at mid-night."

So here's the story in the paper:

Police say a man in his 20s was found dead in the 8900 block of Wildridge Drive just before 1 a.m. today. His death is being investigated as the 35th traffic fatality in Austin this year.

Investigators say the man, who has not been identified, was driving a motorcycle southbound on Wildridge Drive when he lost control, was ejected and struck a utility pole. The motorcyclist was not wearing a helmet.

A passerby saw the man along the side of the road and called 911, police said.

He was taken to University Medical Center at Brackenridge where he was pronounced dead this morning.

Of couse no helmet, shorts, tee shirt. The house is on a bend and people will fly down the street. This guy lost it, hit the mailbox which is on a stone column, hit a utility pole and then was stuff into a huge set of photinia bushes. My ex set he had a broken leg and arm and was alive when they hauled him off.

It's hard to feel sorry for people like this, but on the other hand they are a motorcyclist and he should be used as an example to others to show the importance of wearing gear.

I just wonder it he was drunk? I read somewhere that past midnight something like 50% of drives who are on the road are drunk.

The local scene is in an uproar over the news coverage of a motorcycle fatality that happened last week......They ran a story about the "accident" and immediately ran a story afterwards about dragracing on motorcycles and excessive speed. It was as though they already convicted the rider of doing 250kmh. What wasnt put in the news story was that the guy was actually cut in half by the pole he hit. Also the direction he was traveling had 3 lanes and the drivers in the 2 inner lanes had stopped to allow a left hand turner. He was in the outside lane and didnt even see it coming. He probably WAS speeding but to convict him in the court of public opinion before any accident investigations are complete was pretty disgusting....I guess it happens all the time though.......the medias a joke....ours anyways....

Remember it can happen to us too. Geared up doesnt make it safe. Just lowers the risk some. In reality its not all that much.

Check this out...I bought my Black SV650 in 2002 on a Friday and brought it home in the back of a pickup truck. The next morning, I take the bike out about 5:30am to avoid any traffic. This is the first time I've ridden on the street. While I was out having a ball on my ride, another guy on a black motorcycle hits a tree and kills himself a few hundred yards up the street from my house.

My father-in-law and brother-in-law are both on the fire department and respond to the accident. Imagine what my wife is feeling when she gets a call from her mother asking if I was out on my motorcycle because someone just crashed on a black motorcycle up the street from us? Needless to say, she was mighty releived when I came home safe and sound.

Sometimes weird things just happen!

Jeez! That's a near heart attack situation for any spouse!

We lost a rider here two summers ago shortly after I got my leftover '05 FZ6. The guy was killed when a landscaping truck backed out in front of him as he was passing. It was a Blue and Silver bike, same colors as my FZ6. It hit the news and someone where my wife works asked about me, my bike, the color, etc... Told her about the accident! Ironically, I was calling her just as the woman pointed this all out. She sees the number on her phone as our company and her heart stops as she answers the phone followed by elation and relief to actually hear me on the other end. My first words were "It wasn't me, just in case you'd heard about the cycle accident."

an 18 year old kid on a gsxr600-750? crashed a couple months ago in Lexington NC...he ran off the road his bike hit a utility pole.
he was walking down the road to get help (he survived the crash)
and got hit by a drunk driver.
he died in the hospital.
talk about bad luck.

Here's some irony for you. I was talking to my neighbor there and he said that a motorcyclist died in the EXACT same spot about 11 years ago! The street is a 30pmh residential street that is well lit. The curve in the street is very slight with a slight rise. The only thing I can figure is the the guy was drunk and going too fast. We've had high school kids fly down the street a 50mph. My ex said the police think that he bounced his bike off of the opposite curb and then hit our ulitity pole/mail box column. My ex said she found hair and skin on the stone of the column. YICK!
