Well, I've had my FZ6 for 3 weeks now. I'm going in for surgery tomorrow, and won't be able to ride for about a week. Hopefully I'll be able to finish the rest of my mods soon.

I'm about halfway through the R6 headlight conversion. I've got the brackets prototyped and half of them cut. I just need to test fit them, paint them, add the CCFL tubes and transformers, and figure out where I'm mounting the HID ballast and the Centech.

With the alarm, I'm rapidly running out of under-tank and under-seat space for mounting anything else, and the HID adds two relay-sized units, a larger box, the ballast, and a fuse holder. Add the Centech fusebox, and I think I will have used just about every free inch of space on the chassis.


When it's all done, I'll post a few photos.

For the R6 conversion, I'm following the writeups over on SBN, where two or three of the members have done it already. I bought a like-new set of spare FZ6 headlights, and a wrecked set of R6 headlights from which I salvaged the projectors.

The FZ6 headlight housing, with the covers and reflectors removed, and the R6 projectors sitting inside (unmounted):

After reading various stories of how our stock halogen housing is not designed for HID bulbs, I did not install the HID kit. I opted for Sylvania SilverStar bulbs - they are so much brighter and whiter looking. Would you recommend I install the HID kit in to the stock housing/projector?

Those electrical kits are pretty expensive but a lot cleaner than the homemade harness I created for my Autozone fusebox and power outlet

No. Everything I've heard regarding the HID conversion and the stock reflectors would scream 'don't do it', because your beam pattern will be horrible. It'll just scatter everywhere.

I wanted the R6 projectors even before I decided I also wanted to do the HID conversion, but having decided to add the R6 projectors, HID made sense, as the R6 projectors are well-suited to HID.


Assuming you can find a wrecked R6 headlight assembly (not too hard, given how many there are on the road these days), you might be able to do the R6 conversion cheaply.

So far, my costs are:

Spare FZ6 headlight assembly: $100 (not necessary, but this way I still have a fully-working stock headlight unit, as well as a running bike while I do the work)

R6 headlight assembly: $50

HID conversion kit with H7 bulb and H4 harness for the FZ6: $200

4 dual-CCFL fans: $50

Sheet metal for brackets: $8

high-temp paint: Probably about $5

high-temp clear silicone sealant for holding the CCFLs: Probably about $8.

Yeah. I thought about going the homemade route, and realized that for all the trouble, I'd probably just be happier with the Centech, so I went for it instead. I'm a fan of DIY (the headlight mod is a perfect example), but with something like the fusebox, it's more of a timesink than I'm willing to commit to, when I can just spend about $80 and have done.

Ha, I got a pretty long list of parts coming in and I haven't even registered the bike yet!

Dual HID kits, with both lights constantly on, going to put some frame sliders (not really a project I know)

Got a pair of Ducati STS hardbags coming in on monday that I'll build a custom bracket so they can fit the Z. Here's a pic for those that are curious as to what they look like

Finish up the cosmetic by having a custom paint job done, Got my uncle who paints cars for a living so Im going to see if he can help me out cant wait for all my parts to get here.

Oh and gotta fix current damage on it, bent bars, fairings, ect...

The HID kit is just for low beam. I decided not to do the high beam, since that gets turned off and on a lot, and HID doesn't do well with being turned off and on a lot.

The angel eyes are the inner CCFL tube (the 60mm one) from a dual-CCFL PC case fan from Logisys:
120mm Logisys CCF120WT White CCFL Cold Cathode PC Case Cooling Fan (120x120x25mm, 3/4 Pin, Retail)

Just a quick update:

Surgery on Friday went fine.

I got restless Sunday and started working on the headlight conversion again. I discovered the steel stock I had wasn't thick enough, so I went and bought some new 1/8" x 3/4" steel bar stock, and have finished fabricating the brackets for the R6 projectors.

They've been positioned, and the plastic bolts have been JB Welded in place on the brackets. I'm waiting for the Weld on the right projectors to dry, and then I'll try to take some photos of the current state of the headlights before I paint the brackets.

The 60mm CCFLs will sit just around the edge of the glass on the headlights, and I'm not convinced I want to put them on. The "clear" silicone sealant I bought doesn't seem to dry clear, but milky. I'm still debating whether or not they're going to go on. I need to decide before I heat up the oven and re-seal the FZ6 headlight assembly.



Assuming I get everything back together and roughly aligned this week, I may swap out the headlight assemblies Sunday. I'll be sure to take before/after photos.

I may even do a before/after with and without the HID on the modified assembly as well, since I don't know if I'm going to have the time/energy to both swap the assemblies and do the HID install (I am still trying to recover from organ removal surgery, after all!)

good to hear about the surgery, I got all my stuff for the mods soon, looks like we gotta post up pics once we're done to show everyone here, how a FZ should look like Now I just gotta get it state inspected before I cant mount all the illegal HID stuff. I got to at least put the frame sliders on.

Wow i might just get those lights off the fans then for 12$!! Are the dis-shaped because of the fans? How are you going to install them?
Also, are you going to try to use the switch it comes with to turn the lights on and off?

They're circular.

I'm planning to attach them to the projectors using clear silicone sealant.

I'll probably either not use a switch, or get a weatherproof DPDT switch to use instead of the simple slider switch they come with.
