I just picked up an 07 FZ6 a week and a half ago and am shopping around for insurance. As a new motorcyclist, what types and how much coverages would the more experienced folk recommend I get. The insurance agents I ask seem to recommend max coverage. I feel that some of it may not be necessary? Any Colorado specific tips definitely welcomed. Thanks!

I also have Progressive. Very good price and good customer service. I have similiar coverage to Fozzy6

I've got Progressive on both my bike and car.

With my bike, I purchased insurance online as soon as I brought my bike home, so I could ride it.

I've had 1 accident and progressive was pretty helpful with the claim process.
On the bike side, the agent was very knowledgable and got me every penny he could.
On the medical side, the other guy was a jerk and tried to get away without paying anything, even though I had medical coverage. It took some phone calls to convince him that they owed me money.

My dad had an accident on his bike when he had progressive, and they screwed him over. They salvaged his harley without telling him, and when he got it back from the shop that the agent recommended, the spark plugs were swapped, and the cylinders were flooded with oil. It ran fine before they took it.
I'm sure they were trying to get possession of the bike(it was worth a lot), so the shop could make some coin.

So your experience may vary, but they were pretty good with me.

Thanks all for the responses so far. Looking like I'll probably go with Progressive. Anybody see a reason for going with personal liability coverages as high as 100/300?

I don't see the point. I mean if you can afford it why not, but do you plan on causing an accident that causes 300k worth of damage/medical bills?

If your own insurance company finds you NOT at fault, and somebody sues you over it, most of the time your insurance company will legally represent you.

I removed Uninsured/Underinsured motorist because it was an extra $20/month that I don't really have to spare. Is the extra coverage worth it? I just figured that the chances of getting hit are fairly low as is and being hit by an uninsured motorist is much lower so I couldn't justify a 40% increase in my premium.

Not sure how it is in alabama but in california you'd be INSANE not to have uninsured coverage. It saved my ass.

I went with State Farm (some may call it Snake Farm) cause they insure everything else.

I don't have medical, since my health insurance would cover me, and I have the full 100/300 coverage.

I am in Iowa ( I know it is a really cheap state to insure) and my coverage is only $210/year.

I double checked with them, cause I thought it might just cover 6 months but it shows a year on my certificate.

I haven't had a claim yet (can you hear the wood knocking???) but they have been great to work with for everything else so I am not too worried.
