Inside the Speedometer (dead)

Well For some reason my speedometer died today. I figured out the problem and it was a component diode d1z a27cn that had broke in the inside of it. If you have never seen the inside of a fz6 speedometer, here is your chance lol. Sadly I cannot find this part online and I will end up buying a new speedometer unless i can find it int he next 24 hours.

Geoff, where are you looking for the diode?

Can you get a clear picture of the markings on the body of the diode? (I'm assuming that's where the A27CN is coming from?) The board designation D1Z makes me think it's a zener to regulate the board voltage.

What indications do you have that it's bad?

Digi-Key Digikey is one of the suppliers I used to use when looking for parts..... don't know if you are aware of them. Didn't see anything directly, looking for A27CN....

That's exactly what it's does (regulates voltedge). I know it's this peice that I circled in the picture because I was making a stronger mount for it and one of the bolts went through the plastic and broke the lid off of the component. You can't see it in the picture, but it is damaged physically, I had to use a magnify light to find it. However it only broke while I was riding not when I assembled it. I guess the bike vibrations worke it up, I was running in the higher rpms today off and on for like 3 hours

What voltage does it regulate to? can you check what is on the board with it being broken?

Do you know what form factor the part is? 0603, 0804, 1205? (too big to be a 0402)

Not sure exactly how to check..starting to get a little over me. Is it possible to replace this? If not, Im just going to get a KOSO like wavex had on his bike.
 
I've been looking at gauges for a while now.

By the way we all need to get a ride going really soon.. You, Me, Beth, her hubbie, krid80, fznick and a few misc friends we could get a nice group to go in a few weeks.

I would be leery of making the replacement.... soldering in a lead free part without damaging it, is not the easiest thing in the world. But the part should cost a couple of dollars, at most. If you know for a fact that this its the only damaged part, I would find an electronics supply house in your area, walk in with the board in hand, and ask them to find a replacement part. Radio Shack is a bit too commercial for what you want.... you need to find the sort of place that works on ham radios and CBs.

Odds are good, they'd install the part for you, too.

Not knowing what the part's rated wattage is, and what voltage it's supposed to regulate to, makes it a lot more complicated..... if you want to swap parts and get this one to work, you need to know what the supply voltage is.

That should simply be a matter of setting your DMM for VDC, and measuring across the pads the zener was installed on before it broke. Odds are good, the regulated voltage will be slightly lower than what is on those pads without the zener installed. Within 20%, I'd think.

Once you have a target for the regulated voltage, you can drop a part onto the pads that can dissipate more wattage without problems.... the voltage it regulates is more important than how much power it can withstand draining off to 'hold' that voltage.
