I got to work on a piece of automotive/racing history!

A man brought what looked like a aluminum engine block into the shop a couple days ago and turns out that this big hunk of scrap was part of the block out of the first car to ever win the indy 500!

Don't throw it away. You would be amaze how much that stuff can worth $$$$$. Put that on Ebay. The more info (block #) that you can get the better it is. Call few restoration shop that are specialize in open wheel from that area. I'll search on my side...
 
Oh no its not getting thrown away the guy who it belongs to is.restoring the whole car, i just refered to it as scrap because of the shape its in right now, all cracked up with some big holes in it. They are going to take it and try to have it repaired, and thats where i came in i preped the material by tempering it to bring any oil that had soaked into it to the surface and to soften it up a bit to help it have better stronger fusion when they weld the cracks as well as when they are ready to machine it.

I havent seen the car but if what he told me was true, wich i believe it is then you might just be able to google first winner of indy 500

I looked up some info about it and that was the first car to win at indy, the wasp. Also it had a inline 6 based off a 2 cylinder that was already in production wich looks, exactly like what this is. I also read that the original car is in the indy museum, but i couldnt find anything about wether it runs or still has the engine. So maybe what is sitting in the museum is just the body and chassis?

that is pretty cool, it is amazing to see how such a pinacle of engineering of that time could litterally just fall apart and become "Scrap"

My father is an oil painter, in particular, Historic Auto Racing scenes. He loves to research interesting stories and then design a painting that depicts it.

Here is a little history of the second Indy race, in 1912:

In 1912, Mulford was driving a Knox that had had some severe mechanical problems. Mulford reentered the race after a half hour pitstop, very far in arrears. However, 500 miles of racing in those days was a very great distance and a very difficult feat. At the end, only 10 cars were running, Mulford being the last. He pulled off the track and asked if he was going to get the 10th place award monies.

No, he had to complete all 200 laps. Okay, says he and immediately softened the shock absorbers and reduced tire pressure, then resumed the event at a quite leasurely pace of 40 miles per hour. A bit later, he returned to his pit and had a chicken dinner. After driving around a bit more, he returned and had a drink. Finally, to the exasperation of the officials, he crossed the line in the late evening to collect his $1200 reward.

The rule was changed for all subsequent years.

LOL! I can see why he stuck at it in order to get the cash.....$1200 would of been a lot of money in 1912!

The guy who is going to try and repair the block came in today to pick it up and I had a chance to talk with him a little more and got the whole scope. This was the block out of the original Marmon Wasp, Indy basically had a historic race and invited past winners and cars, and none other than the great Parnelli Jones was chosen to drive the musiem piece and he blew it F up....lol so after months of searching for a doner block with no luck they found Jim Snyder formerly of San Diego to try and repair the block. he invited me down to his machine shop/muesium to take a look around, I might just have to take him up on it

It looks as tho the corrosion is worse than the hole where the parts flew out! Shame on PJ :spank: Where's the Rev limiter????

that actually isnt corrosion its oil, i should have taken before and after pictures but when it came in it looked clean, just like a fresh piece of cast aluminum should but being as old as it is years of oil siting in it the oil actually permiates into to block, and by tempering the entire thing at 450 for about 5 hrs it brings almost all of the oil back to the surface of the material by literaly boiling out. So now when he goes to weld on it, he should be able to get alot better fusion of the material. Metalurgy is some cool @$$ stuff! to me at least

So first pic on the bottom left, the long section with the single large hole in it (below the block), it looks as though the left side is eroded away. Yes/No?

The coloring I can see and that's no big deal that its not uniform. The missing material seems to be a big deal!

Granted impurities in alloys makes them splatter and a PIA to weld successfully - I know why you heated it but I wouldn't call tempering. I'm just sayin....
 
Ok I see what your looking at and no that's actually the oil pan and that's where the rod went straight through it and took the whole corner out. But what do you mean that's not tempering....because that's exactly what the man wanted, for it to be tempered and exactly what he got, I'm just curious as to what you would call tempering, because in metallurgy it basicly is just a term that refers to the process of time vs temperature, required to obtain the desired qualities on metals
