I am a Master of Chemistry!!

Congrats on finishing school! Must be quite a relief. Though, I have to wonder, does one really stop going to school? There's so much to learn. I've been in school for about 4 years and still wonder if I will ever make it to get a BS/BA.
 
I'm working on my PHD in Chemistry too. My thesis is going to be on the decomposition of Beer in the digestive tract! And it will be entirely empirically researched!

I set out to study the kinetics of hydroxyl radical catalyzed decomposition of chloroform in water at high pH. I ended up studying the kinetics a little bit but most of my work was actually spent developing a GCMS method to detect trace amounts of chloroform in water, as no good method existed that used common lab equipment.


What are you studying?
 
ah yes, the old catalyzation by hydroxyl radical. good choice. Did you by any chance investigate its correlation with excess phase variance of a tritetron field held in close axial proximity to the hydroxyl diffusion matrix?

If not, I dare say I am shocked you were given your masters!! What a sad state of affairs....they will just give those master's degrees out like candy these days. Poppyc0ck! Poppyc0ck, I say!!

I'm in my Jr. year studying mechanical engineering, and I just realized that I don't like it. I'm in my third year at a job in the field so I have a decent idea of how things work in the real world as an ME. And, I don't like it. I mean, I really really enjoy designing cool things, none that are ever work related though. So I think I've decided that I am going to leave creating things to a hobby. I hate having to come in and sit at a desk in front of a computer every day. I hate the classes I'd rather be interacting with people, trying to make a difference in their life and the community.

So, I think I am going to switch to a criminal justice major and become a police officer. Maybe a DNR conservation officer. I like talking to people and figuring things out, rather than sitting down with a piece of paper, a calculator, and a bunch of numbers and crunching through something. I also like being outside and am good with a pistol (not that I want to ever have to use it on anyone, but I really enjoy the range)

I don't know what do you think?

I personally think it is a great idea! It is an old saying "If you do something you love for a living you will never work a day in your life!"

I do accounting and auditing for a living and I have done OK. But I regret not going into something else like engineering. Hell, I would be happy fixing motorcycles if I could do that and maintain my standard of living now that I have obligations and family to provide for. But when I was young and single thinking only of money was a mistake.

Its too late for me Luke, save yourself, don't go to the darkside for money only. Do something you enjoy.

Chemistry is pretty general and there are lots of things you can end up doing with a degree. You can go into environmental and make sure people have clean water to drink, biotech and make sure your drug eluting stent releases the drug at the ideal rate, materials (BASF doesn't make the tennis ball, they make the tennis ball bounce higher), etc.

I got a job working on biomaterials at a medical device company in 2000 with my BS. It turned out to be a well paying, personally rewarding field and I'm still in it. Sorry to say this but San Diego is a hotspot for biotech right now.

Take a chemistry class and see how you like it. I started school as an electrical engineering major and switched to chemistry after one class (sorry BikerDude43).
 
Congrats man! Chemistry was always one of my favorite subjects in school. Challenging and rewarding enough to keep you involved :thumbup:

Hahaha that is exactly what I did... only with Graphic Design instead of Engineering... Im currently in my 1st year of Criminal Justice at the Local Community College (excellent program btw) and should be in the Police Academy At the end of my next 3 semesters :thumbup:

Congrats on the Masters BTW I don't think I could handle being in school that long but we will see :thumbup: lol

Also to add onto his list you can do something in the lines of being a Forensic Chemist as well with a Chem Degree...

Congrats Travis! Way to go! Enjoy your free time, it will probably feel kind of weird not having to go to school on a regualar basis.
