I have both, and I've never ridden without them. I'm sure that there are thousands of riders out there without a license. Hell, I wouldn't have given a license to half the people in my MSF class. It was a real eye opener to say the least!

I have them both. If you are uninsured in CA the DMV will suspend your registration. The insurance companies notify the DMV electronically if you are insured or not.

I got my license without taking the MSF course, just went to the DMV and took the test a few days after getting the permit.

I have a big problem with people who drive uninsured. While active duty Air Force I was moved to New Mexico for five years; my auto insurance rate tripled!! I was told that 65% of the drivers in NM were uninsured, and I had to make up the difference. They finally passed a law requiring insurance while I was there, a big whopping $70 fine if you didn't. That's a lot less expensive than insurance, of course, especially if you had a dozen or so DWIs on your record, as way too many people in NM did.

I voted for license but no insurance, but before I get escorted to the door let me explain.

I'm fully licensed and insured but I only carry my license in my wallet. In the UK if you are stopped you are given a '7 day wonder', seven days to produce all your paperwork at the local police station. There is no need to carry you insurance paperwork around with you, especially as most insurers charge if you lose your certificate.
So license only as means of identification. If I'm traveling abroad then I carry the full works.

although i do not have to caary my insurance as per Funky larma i do as i have it all written down on a credit card sized piece of card, i'm with botch as well i have a big issue with uninsured riders and drivers and i wish our country would start clamping down on them instead of pursuing mindless speed cameras

I got my motorcycle licence when I was 16, no long after I got my driver's licence. Here in Nevada, you cannot get your bike registered unless you show proof of insurance. What timing regarding this thread, my roomy went to go take his written motorcycle test and to schedule his skills test. The first available slot to take the skill test was after October 30th. Over two months away. His permit is only good when he's accomponied by a licenced motorcycle rider who's within a visible sight and over 21. I told him that if he gets pulled over, he better make sure it's a motorcycle cop.

Like the othe Brits, I don't actually carry all the documents. There's a body over here called the DVLA (Driver & Vehicle Licensing Authority) they administer all records.

If you don't have a license, insurance, road tax you can't ride. Well, you can ride, but it's illegal & the penalties are quite stiff.

Talking of which I recieved a speeding ticket today, I passed a speed camera at 08:15 last Sunday morning doing 39mph in a 30 limit. 60 quid & 3 points on my license. Bah humbug

Correct me if I'm wrong ... but in the UK you don't need to carry any of the items you have listed ... If you get pulled over by the old bill you get issued a "producer" ... then you have 14 days (I think) to produce all relevent documentation ...

If you can't produce them then its "off with your head"

Hey Phil, that sucks, I got pinged going to work in a 40mph, when I came home it was a 30mph. In the Thames valley you get the option of doing a speed awarness course. £90.00. However, you don't get the points. You have to be endorsment free for three years or you get double the points. Can you do a speed awarnes course up there?

And always on me because in Greece you get fined if you don't have the paperwork on you.

If you are uninsured they take your number plates and your ride!

I got both finally...
When I lived in California, I had my endorsement. Hell, I was an instructor for MSF. I moved to Oregon with only dirt bikes and they asked if I wanted my endorsement. The idiot in me went ahead and spoke up (I did save the $75 temporarily).
I bought my FZ and decided I should probably get my endorcement. In the city of Salem (state capital, main DMV office) they only give skills tests on Friday mornings, to 7 riders. It took me a couple months to schedule the test and I ended up going about 1 hour away for the test, rediculous. That was last week.
Now that I'm legal, I went ahead and hurt my back at work and can't ride for at least 10 days.......
